Here's a post analyzing the stripped down terrible costumes for Masquerade

The beauty in Maria Bjornson's design is the black box feel, with only one or two main set pieces in each scene.

And the Phantom in the original is a jerk, but he at least has redeeming qualities and isn't just whining all the time. You can see why Christine doesn't just blow his head off with an AK-47. The Phantom has a menancing presence, you're unsure if he's supernatural or not until the last scene. The guy on the tour is just a sad sack.

I would be less offended by this production if they just did their own thing completely.

Maria Bjornson is unfortunately not alive to update her vision, however they did use some of her ideas that weren't feasible in 1986 in the Vegas production. You might also be interested in the Czech production, which did all new everything.

Recently-I'll go with the 2006 Aida tour -just so cheap looking

Back in the day---let's see--was it Loretta Swit in Mame (oy) or Robert Goulet and Barbara Eden (not kidding- they were in their 50s) in South Pacific.  I love Eden - but an ingenue?

Oh, wait!! Danielle Brisbois and Bowzer (from ShaNaNa) and a cast of 40 year olds in Grease!!!

I just remember being bored and the sets being very cheap looking.  And the cast was atrocious.  All of them.

Well, it wasn't good on Broadway either...

Personally, I was really underwhelmed by the national tour of The Lion King when I saw it a few years ago (can't remember when).

I saw the recent tour of Annie the night after the 2016 general election and all I remember is that Sandy got the biggest applause.

Well, one thing is for sure...based on the hysterical Betsy Wolfe thread, the national tour of the recical of Carousel that hasn't started rehearsing yet is already the best tour national tour and most likely sold old for its entire run having already earned a record number of Tony awards for every person connected with the Broadway production.  Or at least for whoever is playing Carrie because even though the replacement for Betsy hasn't been announced, the Tony has already been awarded to them.  I don't think they even have to perform the role.  The whole revival could collapse and fold before it begins performances, but whoever she is, will stil be given the Tony.  That's how good they are and the tour will sell itself just based on whoever-plays-Carrie's brilliant career decision to accept the part.  So the worst national tour is definitely NOT the tour of the 2018 revival of Carousel.  Phew!  That's a relief!
