A tie:
"Zoya's Apartment" (done many years ago at Broadway's Circle in the Square"); and
"Bring Back Birdie" (embarrasingly awful!)(I believe it never officially opened at the former Martin Beck Theatre). It was the first time I watched groups of people leave the theatre throughout the show. (I stayed, since I felt so badly for Chita Rivera and Donald O'Connor, and the rest of that cast!)

Posted: 12/5/04 at 3:01pmOMG mbjts, I had blocked "Bring Back Birdie" from my mind. Yes, what a pice of crap that was. I could not escape the theatre right after the show or leave before it was over because I had to do a back stage tour when the performance was done. I was there with a school group. I remember all of those TV screens that were used to show things like the washing machine and the soap boxes. Who thought about that? I'll ad that I also felt badly for Maurice Hines to the other cast members you've already mentioned. What a night. Oy.

I saw a production of Anne Frank in San Francisco that was so horrible and so bad that I wanted to screem "She's Upstairs!" When the Nazi's came.....
I mean it was SO BAD. They applauded when the family was rounded up.... I laughed at all the wrong times (was there anything that was supposed to be funny???)

David Hasselhoff as "Jekyll & Hyde."
There aren't enough adjectives to describe how truly dreadful he was.

I'll have to agree with Fabalacohen in saying Titanic, and I'm also not too fond of Kiss Me Kate...
After hearing Brush Up Your Shakespeare reprised 50 times, you about wanna kill yourself.

Notre Dame de Paris
Thou Shalt Not
Closer to Heaven
Jekyll and Hyde (Broadway)
Big (Tour)
Footloose
Too many regional and amateur productions to name.
Titanic? Seriously?? The WORST??? I think it boasts one of Broadway most gorgeous scores in the last 15 years, but to each his own, I guess.

I didn't like Sweet Smell either, but Thou Shalt Not was MUCH MUCH worse. Sweet Smell, at least, wasn't a disaster on stage. It just wasn't an interesting story to begin with. But Thou Shalt Not was just a confusing embarassing mess. I'll still never forget poor Debra Monk as the stroke victim in the second act (no dialogue, no songs, total waste of talent) desperately trying to spell "murder" with the Scrabble tiles. And of course, the gang bang ballet. Tugboat was pretty much the only scene in the show that worked.
*shudder*
re: Worst Thing You Have Ever Seen#40
Posted: 12/6/04 at 10:51amI'd have to say it was a tie between Titanic and Urban Cowboy.

Posted: 12/6/04 at 11:00amI haven't thought of Speed The Plow in years. It and she, were unbearable. I've seen a few "gems" in Los Angeles, most recently, The 10 Commandements, of course, but the absolute worst was a workshop of the Selena musical that thankfully, never went any further. It just doesn't get much worse. And I'll have to agree about Footloose. Sad thing is, a few of the upcoming shows are eerily and horrifically reminiscent of Footloose. Updated On: 12/6/04 at 11:00 AM

Posted: 12/6/04 at 11:40amMaybe I just was too uneducated to get it at the time, but My Life with Albertine stands out as the only show I sat through wishing it was over. I'm sure SOMEONE must have enjoyed it, but sadly, no one I know is among them. The music dragged, the plot dragged more, and an amazing cast of getting to be well-known Broadway actors spent a good two hours or so trying to make sense of a boring book and lackluster tunes. I agree about My Life with Albertine, although Brent and Kelli were great, given the material. But I have to say that I don't consider Brent Carver, Emily Skinner, Chad Kimball, Jim Poulos or Kelli O'Hara, to be "getting to be well-known". Anyone who's familiar with theatre would surely know these actors. :)
Edited to add that the very worst thing I've ever seen onstage was the tour of Fame. Simply awful.

Posted: 12/6/04 at 3:36pmI have to say that I did like Thou Shalt Not. I know how bad it was and how worse it could have been and yes, there was some truly horrid moments but I still enjoyed "Take Her To Mardi Gras" was really good and I love "Oh Ain't it Sweet" -- You have to admit that it was the show that people realized that Norbert Leo Butz was going to be something!

"You have to admit that it was the show that people realized that Norbert Leo Butz was going to be something!"
Well, if you mean by people, the Tony nomination then I guess that's possible but anyone who saw Norbert in Rent or Cabaret, or even in Saved or Juno and the Paycock, knew then 'he was going to be something'. :)
