I'd have to agree with many of you, although I do like Wicked, Idina was bad that night, you could her gasping for air, it was a bit much...BUT, I definately have to say that Grease this year was even worse, it was very amateurish and all together awful...
Can't you hear her gasping for air every other time she sings? I can hear it in some places on the cast recording.
Grease was horrible, but the first that came to mind is Spring Awakening.
Oh yeah, you totally can lakezurich, but for some reason, it seemed much more amplified and obvious during this performance...
"I'd also like to add The Little Mermaid"
That's not really fair, it was more a performance to get more TONY viewers because the best musical nominees weren't that well known. Sierra was not given enough time to be her amazing self and the way the mixed the songs weren't the best.
I could be a lone but I hated the "In the Heights" performance.
Re: Idina Menzel's gasping-- when I first heard the song "Defying Gravity" on the cast recording, I noticed that there was one bit that went, "Everyone deserves the chance to fly *SQUEE!*" Well, I always assumed until today when I watched the Wicked Tony performance that the 'squee' was Glinda, excited about the fact that Elphaba was flying. But now I know that's just how she breathes.
I can't believe Passing Strange hasn't been mentioned. I loved it but I recall alot of people posting that they hated that performance.
Um, does anyone remember Alan Cumming and Cyndi Lauper in "The Threepenny Opera"? Not their best work...........
I had never heard of Starmites, but that was bad. How in the world did that find it's way to the Tony's?
Grease was really bad. It looked like a pretty good high school production. Cry Baby, a show that seems very closely related to Grease, showed Grease up big time.

The terrible WICKED performance made me stay away from the show until this year - I still hated it.
I think that the "Wicked" performance on the Tonys is okay. She did much better on the recording and in the actual live shows. However, if you think that was bad, look at the Royal Variety performance of "Defying Gravity". I love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love "Wicked", but Idina was horrible at the Royal Variety. So out of breath and did the "singy-talky thing" which I don't mind when Willemijn does, but I hate when Idina does that. I don't mind it when Willemijn says "Ihr erdenkriecher" in a singy-talky thing.
Spring Awakening was just horrendous! It definitely did not make me want to run out and see the show.
Well that EVITA performance clip was lip synced, so I'm not sure its fair to call it one of the best - though it was effectively staged.
Truly, the worst Tony performances were in the early 80s when they had an 'ensemble' of 'stars' like Suzan Anton, Stefanie Powers, Rex Smith and John Rubenstien lip syncing to hideous random musical theatre medleys with total bizarre direction and choreography.
When I saw the title of this board, I thought of Idina Menzel's Wicked performance. Then A Catered Affair popped into my head, followed by Grease.
Those were pretty dern bad if you ask me.
Spring Awakening and Passing Strange just didn't survive past the censorship and time constraints. Both came off looking like really boring rock concerts.
The PATTI LUPONE GYPSY Tony performance was perfection.
As unfortunate as it sounds, I don't think the performances from Sondheim's recent revivals have really played out well on TV. With the exception of Company, which was just Raul doing his thing, Sunday, Sweeney, and Into the Woods have been either boring or choppy. Sondheim just isn't meant for editing and time constraints. Or performing numbers out of context.

I saw Passing Strange just a couple days before the Tonys. I remember watching the awards and thinking, "If I saw this before the show, I would have given my tickets away." Just didn't work on TV!
Can I switch gears a second and say I've never been so spellbound as watching the number from Will Rogers Follies on the Tonys?

both rent things were awkward and a let down. they can do better that la vie boheme/ seasons of love
I actually loved the "Spring Awakening" performance. I thought it was really fun and energetic.
The most recent "Rent" performance was really disappointing to me. It was kind of a mess, in my humple opinion.
The "Wicked" performance was horrendous.
I didn't like Grease' performance AT ALL this year. It definitely seemed awkward.
