yet again margo i agree, what else was nice, they let the winners speak longer too. instead of "host banter"

The show itself was fine, but I was disappointed with the winners. The actual telecast was entertaining.

Loved the thing John Tartaglia did. I didnt mind that Jersey boys won though yes i wanted drowsey to win and it deserved to how can u not give sweeney revival. I understand Patti, Michael and Mano had lots of good competition (though lachanze bought her tony by thanking oprah at the end) but why the hell did pajama game win? Harry conick in both his opening and music performance was terrible. He cannot sing! He was so terrible it bothered me like no other. It was well paced but seemed rushed and defintily a very dissapointing night. Defintiyl not the best tonys, honestly i really missed jackman.

I'm with you, Margo

I would have preferred a stronger opening to the show.

I forgive the error with Mr. McGillin and chalk it up to a live production

I was extremely disappointed with Paul Rudd. If you know you're eyes are bad, bring your glasses with you.

I wish you got bigger tastes of the plays and a little more time to take in the professionals who departed this world in the past year.

I loved that the silly banter was taken out.

There were highs and lows, moments to cherish or quickly forget, mistakes and highlights, surprises and expected wins. I enjoyed the night.

It was not the worst ever, but it definitely wasn't the best. I was wasn't thrilled, I was disapointed, but I still enjoyed it. The utter lack of Hugh Jackman was quite upsetting. And the opening number did set the stage for the energy of the show...unfortunately.

In the Phantom thing, it sounded like it was a cd that skipped...it didn't even sound like it was supposed to jump to that spot...and he did a good job of getting back on track.

In this year of tribute to Tony winners, I was hoping for an injection of Angela Lansbury. Alas.

I'm sorry, but Hugh Jackman's self-love really was getting on my nerves. I couldn't have taken a third year.

I gotta agree with Margo on this one.

I enjoyed the lack of useless banter and uneccessary songs/medleys from a 'host' thrown in just to give the host more star power.

I liked that the winners spoke longer.

Agree that there could have been more featuring the plays although I've still never seen them do anything like I liked. They always try different things like scenes, etc. and nothing, IMO, has clicked just yet.

I also really enjoyed this year's tribute to colleagues lost. While I completely agree that they did really zoom through the montage of names, I thought the tributes to Wilson and Wasserstein were incredibly classy without being mushy and/or sentimental. I think part of that was the actors that participated in that segment.

I was pleasantly surprised, as I expected it to crash and burn, as I felt it did several years ago when it went wihtout a host.

I do also wish there were a better opening number. With that much talent in Radio City, can't they make some kind of fun medley so that the Tony opening is a real treat - something you don't see everyday?

the reason that this was the worst tonys ever was because i sat in a room of people who watched the show and made fun of the way different stars looked, they shouted out their misinformed opinions, and they were rude and disrespectful on a night that should be celebratory of the live theater. it was horrifying. i want my night back. im still so furious.
that, in addition to not being so nuts about any of the shows this year made this a veeeeeery unenjoyable broadcast.
im watching alone next year.

I've been watching Tonys for about 30 years and the shows did seem zippier back when they were only two hours long. Of course, back in the '70's they didn't have separate categories for best revivals and best set design for plays and musicals.

But now it's three hours long, why can't we get more than four minutes of a song from a nominated show? I saw a clip of Liza singing "City Lights" on the Tony's the year that "The Act" was nominated and it lasted over six minutes. (A bit too long, true.) And a Tony Awards medley should have no more than two songs in it. That's why "Jersey Boys" came off better than "Sweeney" in tonight's broadcast.

And, finally, Best Musicals have not also won Best Book and Score for some time now. "Phantom" lost book/score to "Into the Woods". "Two Gentlemen" lost score to "Follies".

Acknowledge. Accept. Move On.

I really enjoyed the show. My favorite part was when they showed the Best Play nominees. Even though I knew History Boys would win, it was really cool how they showed all the sets. I'm a set fanatic for some reason, so that was really cool. Although, how the guy won for the History Boys set was beyond me. It wasn't all that exciting, but then again, maybe it does stuff during the show or something.

Also, did anything happen with Spamalot? Someone said that there was suppose to be a bit with Spamalot when they present the Theater Wing people. Did it happen or did I just miss it? What exactly happened.

You missed it.
And while it was better than just being talked at, I hate Spamalot, so I didn't enjoy it.
And, at the beginning, I wish they had stopped focusing on Harry... I wanted to see the video going on behind him.
My sister and I both literally moved our bodies to the right to look around him... and then realized we weren't actually in the room... so that wouldn't work... lol

Forgive me for asking if this has been answered before, but what did they do for the opening number? I didn't get home till around 9:00 sunday night, so i missed the first hour of the awards.

Getting back on topic, I don't think awards show itself was bad. IMHO, it definatly seemed to move right along and there were few moments where it dragged.

I was very surprised at some of the winners, though. I was shocked when Sweeney Todd didn't win Best Revival, as I thought that it was a shoo-in to win the award. I was surprised when Jersey Boys won Best Musical, as I thought that it was going to go to The Drowsy Chaperone.

I'm not really upset that Jersey Boys won. The only thing that bothers me is that producers may try to capitalize on Jersey Boys' success and produce even more jukebox musicals, something I don't think Broadway neccessarily needs.

Okay, as good as Jersey Boys is, it's not exactly original material... why should it win Best Musical? There were other shows nominated with original songs that deserved the award much more.

I'm angry at this year's Tonys. Then again, I'm angry at every year's Tonys for some reason or another.

In a world where VCRs cost about 20 bucks, there really is no excuse for missing an hour of anything.
I agree with those that think this was one of the best Tony Award shows in recent years. I loved the no host concept, as well.

I was fine with not having a host, the thing is, there was the opening thing with Harry Connick Jr, and so I was sort of expecting him to host I guess, and then he just never came back, which was sort of weird. I think one reason I didn't like the show as much as I have in the past is I didn't especially care for any of the shows, besides maybe Sweeney and Drowzy, but that's not the Tony's fault.

I agree that having John on with his puppet was weird because he's been away from it for so long. Why didn't Barrett do it?

Theatreboy, I don't understand how you say Harry can't sing. If you go by the Tonys, neither can Idina or Tonya.

He is a great singer, but it's a daunting task to sing in front of 6000 people and be broadcast life nationally.

Apparently, Connick slipped a disc in his back the day before (which is incredibly painful) and was on heavy pain medication which would explain his somewhat odd zombie-like performance.

Uh, worst Tony Awards ever just going by the awards? I can understand feeling it was a boring awards ceremony, which is was, but they have a LONG history of giving out awards to the wrong people. Lion King over Ragtime, anyone? Spamalot over The Light in the Piazza? Phantom of the Opera over Into the Woods? Fosse over Parade? I could go on for pages. :P

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!
