I feel that Avenue Q has no basis. It seems kind of corny. I know it won best musical or whatever but I think that it lacks content and doesn't seem very amusing. Everyone has complaints about life, you don't need to put it into a musical.
I was just wondering if you have seen it?
[Not being nasty like so many others on this board]
So many "senior citizens" were dying of laughter - was dying the wrong word?
Even a blind lady that was their with her seeing eye dog (who was also laughing????)
Anyway, the staging of the show along with the performance is amazingly hilarious.
When I walked out I said exactly this: "Although I feel that Wicked should've won the Tony ::runs and hides and screams apologies::, I see why Avenue Q won."
I do feel that the puppets give it a push - if it were people it would just be Rent without the AIDS issue (well, what is Rent without the AIDS issue?)
Please don't hurt me for this comment. Somehoe it turned in a wrong direction. Perhaps it was starting with the first time I said the word "I."
No I have not seen the show, and I'm completely aware that I could be wrong. But I know that everyone has different opinions. Thanks for being honest! And I'm also sure that if I saw it, I would enjoy it because it does seem so funny! But to be honest, looking at the musical from the point of view that I am at (which is never have seen it) it seems every different than the shows I usually like. But I'm open to new things! Thanks again. :)
these negative threads are the very reason i have stayed away for the most part from the main message board. they never provide an intelligent discussion. all they serve is to provoke and incite in-fighting between board members.

sorry jmaclover,I'm not a mindreader,& clover was shorter to type-careful the way you throw around terms like lousy-the actor you refer to has gotten good reviews & has serious chops-haven't heard anything about the cd...
If you look at my past posts they are intelligent, I think, Marquise.
StarL925 - I think Ave Q is my kind of humor LOL.
I don't know of anyone that didn't laugh - I do know that people don't like it because of its crude humor.
I think Ave. Q has to be seen to be truly appreciated. I thought the score and book/lyrics were great, but there's something about the show's visual/visceral appeal in person.
I know people of all ages enjoy it, but I think it really speaks in particular to 20-30somethings trying to find their way in that post college/pre-family place...I knew I would think it was funny, but was really surprised that it moved me to tears several times. The convention of the puppets allows the show a degree of sincerity and sentiment that is SO heartfelt and that would totally not have come across (or would have seemed schlocky or corny) with only live actors.
We are such a meta, cynical post-modern theatre-going audience.....well some of us are.....and finding a way into people's hearts that goes beyond the usual broadway showstopper, something that's innovative and smart, deserves to be rewarded.
And I liked Wicked too, mind you (I've seen it 3x and own the OCR which I don't for Ave Q) but I have no problem with Q winning the tony....it spoke to me, if you will:)
I agree that both shows moved me.....AQ was happy....Wicked was I dont know - but I feel like Wicked moved me more.
Did anyone realize that both shows (excluding Wicked the book, please) don't have original idead:
Ave Q: A guy trying to find his way, etc (Joe's Apratment LOL)
Wicked: Geek gets the boy (She's All That to name one)
Please, I loved both shows, yes they put a new spin on these ideas, etc..
Golda's Balcony is an AMZING show - go see Tovah Feldshuh
jmaclover... If you thought that "geek gets boy" was the theme and premise of Wicked, I think ya missed somethin.
Worst show on Broadway?
Well I won't answer that question. I do however think there is a tie between:
Prymate and Jackie Mason's musical as worst shows that I have ever had to sit through.
And Prymate was worse because there was no escape. I could not leave there was no intermission.

Hehe
After I posted I realized that.
I mean I understand it all (I didn't get into Columbia because of my voice)
I was just saying that Holzmans book tunred the show into a 1)The popular girl wants something that the unpopular girl desires and vice versa. I mean, yeah we can talk about Evil and all --- but I was just making a point that neither Wicked nor AQ have very original plots once you look past the medium used to illustrate some point (Oz and, well, Ave Q)
I do understand the points of the show - I'm just trying to make a simple point - which is no longer simple!
sure, but by that token, jmaclover, all stories are derivative in some way just by being in a certain genre...I think you could make that argument for most original stories/shows/etc.
I know.
Somewhere my point got lost - I don't even remember what it was anymore.
Okay, were getting off the topic here. Let's stick to POTO. Remember this show came out in the 80s! You have remember what those special effects were like at that time. The show is one of the best and I dare anyone to challenge it! Muhhaahahahaahahah
::Challenging it::
HEHEHE
I started this thread and it had NOTHING to do with POTO
I'll always have a soft spot for "Phantom"--it was the first Broadway show (and indeed one of the first plays) I ever saw. I was only seven years old! Damn that show's been running a long time...
good thread...
well I hated "Mamma Mia", i mean it's a fun show, but there's no point in it and the music is just so...boring...each song sounds the same( well I guess that's cause it's Abba *lol). And it's not very dramatical, then at least it should be funny-and it's not!
Another one I really didn't like too much was My Fair Lady.
Miss Saigon and Starlight Express are pretty boring, too!
love,
nona
I have to agree with POTO...It was as exciting as watching paint dry.
Now that it's a tourist attraction, there's no motivation to keep it fresh and interesting.
I started one of these a while ago my position stays the same
1. Bombay Dreams
2. Dracula
if you're gonna post a question like this - please make it a bit more challenging - this one is just too easy to answer and so obvious...LOL...
Dracula - why? Wildhorn
or it might be Brooklyn - just plain blech
Since "BFO" closed, I'd have to say "Dracula" is the worst show playing now. Yes, the sets and costumes and performaces were wonderful in "Dracula," but a poorly underwriten show can't be carried by those aspects alone. I was sitting in my seat during the end of Act 1 thinking, "Just because the show's producers promised a set that was in constant motion doesn't mean it would promise a good show." My thoughts turned hopeful, thinking that if this poor show slipped in between the cracks, then maybe a GOOD show can do the same.
