Dare I say this knowing Anthony Rapp posts on this board? Okay, I'll say it, the off-off-off Bway show "Mister." Eesh. Murdering someone with a barbeque fork that someone just got as a birthday present? Weird! I did enjoy Anthony Rapp and Yasmin Alers chemistry together though. Just needs a lot of rewrites.

Having just returned from sitting through Bombay Dreams, I'm suprised that no one else has mentioned it. The only thing that it had going for it were the costumes ~ and the singing, when it could be understood, was mediocre at best. I was glad I didn't pay full price.
I would even go so far to say that Bombay Dreams made me think that maybe...just maybe Brooklyn wasn't the worst musical I've ever seen on Broadway.
I think BOMBAY DREAMS is a masterpiece when compared to BKLYN. And how did you not understand what they were singing? Except in the "rap" song when most of it's in another language anyway. I don't by any means think that BOMBAY is a good show - it's not. It's a great production of a crap show, and I think the cast is very talented. I just dont see how someone can think it's flat out terrible...

I was utterly repulsed by both "Cats" (when I wasn't finding it grotesque (I hate when grown-ups play pets or kid; and I kept picturing the body odor that just had to be permanently present in those ugly costumes), I was finding it excruciatingly dull) and "Sunset Blvd." (Glenn Close playing a 50-ish woman as if she were 90, screeching her songs along the way). I've seen plenty of shows that I didn't like, but these two are in a league of their own!
i am surprised that not many people have posted cats. THat would be at the top of my list! and ready to go and hide but the phantom of the opera and les miz. I am not one for those type of shows.
"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell

The Frogs- dreadful! Phantom of the Opera Aspects of Love Cats Jekyle & Hyde- dear god!
"It never bothered me that she called me a c*nt, it bothered me that I answered to it!" Carol Channing about Ethel Merman filming an episode of "The Love Boat"
I would have said Cats, but I saw it on PBS, so that doesn't count.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive.
"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.
MusicSnob22 - Too bad you didn't see the original cast in Bombay Dreams. Dharker as Rani was fantastic.
I thoroughly enjoyed Bombay Dreams and don't think it is a crap show at all. It is a stage tribute to the classic Bollywood romance films. It never tries to be anything else and it works. If you're expecting something more involved than the standard musical plots similar to the early Broadway musicals of the 30s and 40s that are considered "classic", then you were misinformed. Strong score, beautiful costumes and choreography, cute story, and strong voices. What's so bad about that?
And I forgot about Bounce. That was pretty bad. A couple of good songs, but a muddy plot and a complete lack of heart and sympathy that left me baffled and ambivalent.

I am very sad to see that someone said that "Closer to Heaven" was bad. I would have loved to see it.
Also to the same person who said the above -- did see "Notre Dame de Paris" in the original French or in English. The French stage version, I think, would be a lot better than the English stage version. The songs are ten times better and they make more sense.
I saw both Notre Dame and Closer to Heaven in London. I don't think the difference between the French and English versions of Notre Dame would have mattered. The bookless pop concert with a chorus of Cirque du Soleil-esque acrobats lip-syncing to backing tracks wasn't my idea of a good musical. The biggest problem with Closer to Heaven was a book chock full of awful characters making horrible decisions. I had zero sympathy for anyone in the show. The sets were bus-and-truck tour wuality at best and the choreography was embarassing. There were a couple of decent songs, but like most Pet Shop Boys albums, quickly became monotonous. The best part of the evening was meeting Sandra Bernhardt and her girlfriend (although also one of the most embarassing moments of my life as well).

Jackie Mason's Musical was the worst thing i have ever seen. Some others: PRYMATE Brooklyn (But Ramona saved it from being a walkout) Vincent The Musical- My friend fell asleep and we walked out Imaginary Friends- painful Boobs The Musical- I was in awe about how tacky a musical could be. But one of the women was really hysterical. Still made my list of worst. Birdy's Bachlorette Party- One of the male dancers gave me his card and solicited prostitution. (Joke or not I wanted to hurl)
I agree with MusicSnob22 about the vocals in Bombay Dreams. Is the actor playing Sweetie ever NOT having pitch problems? Every single person I know who has seen it has come out saying "Ugh! Sweetie was awful!" Sad, considering she's arguably the most interesting and complex character.
The other principles' vocals are ok at best. The original Priya did have a pretty enough voice, but those are a dime a dozen. There was absolutely nothing special about any of the singing.
However, I did thoroughly enjoy the dancing- the dancers are top-notch in this show.
Having said all that, in no way do i think Bombay Dreams is the worst show I've seen. That distinction goes to CATS.
I must just block CATS out of my mind as much as possible, except of course when I'm very depressed, dress in black, sit at the end of my favorite bar and chase everyone else out by playing (back to back) the Barry Manilow and Barbara Streisand Memorys that've been on the jukebox since the 80's.
