Would the movie Election make a good broadway musical? I can picture it as a broadway show!
That's a really interesting thought...I absolutely adore the book and movie. Maybe with the right direction?
it's a book?? I love the movie. I think it'd be a great off broadway musical.

And think who could star....Megan Hilty, Matthew Broderick, and Mark Harelik.
Ahhh, I love Election. I suppose it could be an interesting musical. Imagine Tracy Flick's numbers. "Pick Flick"!!!
Love the plot..I'd need to see the outlined concept before making any judgements..

I think it would make for a better adaptation than most of the idiotic movie to musical adaptations in the process right now.
I nominate William Finn to write the score.

He`s the one who did Spelling Bee right?

I think it would make a great musical. It's very quirky. It would work as well as Legally Blonde would work.

I have no real opinion one way or another. I can't remember the film well enough except that it is a funny satire.
But of course I do have questions. Basic questions that everyone writing a musical needs to ask before putting pen to paper. (Lestat anyone? Big? Sweet Smell of Success? Etc., infinitum)
1) What do these characters have to sing about? Do in fact they "sing" or even need to?
2) Can a musical version tell the same story better than the original work? Will the addition of song (and dance) clarify or extend the themes of the piece?
3) Will the songs be external or internal? Is the show book driven, score driven, dance driven, or star driven?
Discuss.
For me, much of the humor in Election was in visual, purely nonscripted moments, which I imagine would be difficult to musicalize. Alexander Payne is a very visual director. However, the best of luck in whatever you're doing. Hope it turns out well.

While I adore the film, and I do believe a commerical producer has the stage rights to the movie, I don't know how successful a Broadway musical it would be.
Someone said it already, but Payne is a very cinematically visual director, and part of the charm and humour of the film is in moments that would be hard to recapture on stage.
Although, I could definitely see the characters having a lot to sing about, especially since the majority are high school students
This is actually a great idea. I love it when movies that would make sense as musicals get turned into one.
My only concern is that a Broadway version of Election would whitewash the hard satirical edge of the movie. It's really very mean, but you forget that watching it, which is why it's so good. I don't know if they could make a teen musical on Broadway be that bitingly adult. It might alienate people.
Please, please, PLEASE give us something ORIGINAL!!!! I love the movie. But I love Spelling Bee, and Drowsy Chaperone so much more because they are ORIGINAL works.

I'm tired of musicals about high school students. Mostly I'm tired of seeing 27-year-olds playing high school students.
