Point taken, Fizz, though in the case of a character that has been created, I'd assume that the last name was an indication of her heritage, rather than something arbitrary.

not all jewish people are white, like whoopi goldberg to my knowledge is jewish so if they had a african american mark that would be alright. wasn't pat briggs (nytw) collins white?

I always thought the fact Mimi's mother called and left her message in Spanish was a sure-fire way to assume Mimi was hispanic. But as someone said, there was a lot of mixing way back when, and some Latinos are milk. Does anyone remember Shakira? Colombian, that one was.
And it seemed to me Angel was hispanic as well, because she and Mimi sing that one verse in La Vie Boheme where they're talking about the good ol' Latino things. ...or now that I think about it, to like, two good ol' latino things. Hmm. Didn't think THAT one quite through.
But on the questions:
No, it wouldn't be greatly affected should the races be changed.
Yes, it would be affected should the sexual orientations be changed.
Yes, it would be affected should Jonathan Larson were still living.

Yea most likely
Well, if you want to get TECHNICAL (talking about cast members, not actual characters), Merle Dandridge, the current Joanne, is actually part-Korean. So. There.
I think the general message of RENT would be the same. I mean, they DID have a Korean tour of RENT. Yes, all the actors were Asian, and I'm sure it had the same impact as the Broadway stage did.
They also had Rent in the Philippines. They were Filipino.
Jose Llana is Filipino and has played Angel. According to casting notices I've seen, they do list race preferences and stuff like that. For example, Angel is listed as either Hispanic or Asian. But really, it really wouldn't matter if the races were "changed." I don't know if I'm making this up, but I think Enrico Rodriguez (also Filipino) played Mark on the road. I may be totally making that up, but I think I read it somewhere. I hope it's true, it gives me (yes, Filipino) a chance to hopefully play Mark one day. Boy, would I love that.
