Since it's been ten years and they haven't made any further forays into broadcasting musicals I'm going to guess that MTV wasn't over the moon with the ratings and response to Legally Blonde.

Cabaret would be wasted on today's MTV. To really do something of Cabaret's caliber, tone and subject matter correctly, you need the artistic commitment that HBO could give it. The networks would inevitably try to sand off its edges, and as was mentioned above, Bravo and A&E are far from their original identities.
I wish they had struck right after the success of Chicago, when the iron was scorching hot.
