Writing on the Wall - Betty Buckley in the OBC of EDWIN DROOD

I stumbled across this today! What a joy. I saw Betty (and the full OBC) in The Mystery of Edwin Drood while it was in previews. I will never forget how brilliant this cast was, and her rendition of the final number "The Writing On the Wall."

The sound isn't so great here (hey, it's from 1985), but jump to the last minute or so. Voices like hers are so very rare on Broadway (or anywhere else for that matter). And her last note is jaw-dropping.

This is Betty Buckley in her prime!

The score is terrific!

This needs a revival now, too. Especially with audiences ready to vote for or against their favorite players (ala "Idol" or "Survivor"). It was ahead of its time by 20 years.

Thanks so much for posting this...I didn't know it was online. Buckley is such a phenomenal performer...I can't imagine watching her hit those notes in person...awesome!

I have no money, buy I'd gladly back a revival of this classic.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

Thanks so much for posting this. I looked for clips from the OBC forever and could never find anything but the Tony performance and the music video they did. I gave up looking a few months ago.

Its one of my favorite scores and I think its incredibly underrated. It needs a revival badly, but only if you can get a totally first rate cast.

EVERYONE needs to watch this, and let's hope it doesn't get taken down. What a miracle this tape is.

For the record, that's a high E, and even though the recording sounds a little "tinny" it is true to the pitch. That's how it was, eight shows a week.......

Thank You, Besty!

I haven't heard this song in ages. "Drood" was such a lot of fun. And I have always thought that it was such a shame that Rupert Holmes never wrote another score.

Thanks for posting basty!

Drood is one of my favorite shows. I would love a revival!

A shame no video exists of Cleo Laine doing The Wages Of Sin.
....but the world goes 'round
