XANADU Enters Billboard Cast Albums Chart

The original Broadway cast recording of XANADU skates onto the Billboard Top Cast Album chart, entering the top ten. JERSEY BOYS remains atop the list for its fourth consecutive week.

At this time, the PS Classics XANADU CD is only available via pre-sale on the company's website and in the Helen Hayes Theatre lobby, according to PS Classics co-founder Tommy Krasker. The XANADU CD — featuring Kerry Butler, Cheyenne Jackson, Tony Roberts, Mary Testa, Jackie Hoffman, Curtis Holbrook, Anika Larsen, Kenita Miller and Andre Ward — will hit stores Jan. 8, 2008. It entered the chart this week at No. 10.

Rhino's JERSEY BOYS cast recording holds steady at No. 1, again edging out Decca Broadway's WICKED, which places at No. 2.

LEGALLY BLONDE's original Broadway cast recording on Ghostlight Records also holds steady at No. 3, while Decca Broadway's MAMMA MIA! and SPRING AWAKENING round out the top five.

Along with WICKED and MAMMA MIA!, the cast recordings of AVENUE Q (RCA Victor) and MONTY PYTHON'S SPAMALOT (also on Decca) have remained on Billboard's Top Cast Album Chart for the full 103 weeks since the chart's inception.

Not bad considering it's only available by pre-sale and in the theatre right now!

re: XANADU Enters Billboard Cast Albums Chart

That's awesome but unfortunately I doubt it will be on the top 10 again until after the official release on Jan 8th (but ya never know.)

Btw - Olivia was on the ABC special last night, "Holiday at Ford's Theater" singing "Xanadu" (yay).
I missed the intro and was wondering if they mentioned the Broadway show. Anybody???

YAY! So glad to hear that!

I'm just sad because I ordered my Xanadu CD over a week ago from PSClassics.com and I still haven't received it!

Sisters REJOICE! Such wonderful news on a dreary cold and dark night.
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

We know that but what's not true? If you were referring to my comment... I meant released in stores all over on Jan. 8th.

re: XANADU Enters Billboard Cast Albums Chart

Unless the rules have changed I don't see how a cast album that hasn't been released to stores yet can enter the Billboard chart, since the chart is based on store sales, not pre-sales on a label website. Well, maybe it's all different now. I know I had an album on the classical crossover chart that remained in the top five for almost a year, but it didn't enter that chart until it was released in stores and the stores' sales tallied.

Since a good amount of the sale of cast recordings comes from the merchandise booth at the theatre, I'm assuming Billboard reports those numbers in the cast albums chart.

re: XANADU Enters Billboard Cast Albums Chart

There was a general Billboard eligibility change just a few weeks ago -- previously, albums that were exclusive to a particular retailer could not enter the chart, but the rule was changed just in time for The Eagles (exclusive to Wal-Mart at the time) to enter at No. 1, delegating Britney Spears's new album to No. 2.

While it is great for Xanadu to have its album enter the Top 10 despite such limited access, it says something about how low Cast Album sales are that it could do so.
