I haven't met jordangirl in person, but I like her ! And broadwayrocks, how do you know if her posts are useful or not ? You've been here, what, a couple of months ? Why don't you try to have some respect for someone who is here 2 MORE YEARS than you ? The fact that she doesn't like something you like doesn't make her useless !

Posted: 3/29/08 at 10:07pmThis show isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it isn't awful either. Most of the bashing is against Mel to try and humble him (will never happen). The same backlash occurred for The Odd Couple because people resented the adulation paid to The Producers. If you want to bash the show because you don't like it, that's fine. The "joy" that most posters get from bashing a show is a bit disturbing. Don't forget, there are people trying to make a living and helping to close a show is taking food off of someone's table. This show closing will hurt many hard working people, Mel isn't one of them. He hardly needs the money.

"The same backlash occurred for The Odd Couple because people resented the adulation paid to The Producers."
There was a backlash against The Odd Couple, because (except for Lane) it wasn't all that funny. Matthew Broderick was still playing Leo Bloom, with the same irritating voice and all.
The big issue with Young Frankenstein is that it just isn't as funny as The Producers. The score is not as good, Stro's work, which seemed innovative and fresh in The Producers, now feels like retread. And, The Producers had a larger than life STAR in the lead who could make reading the phonebook amusing. Roger Bart, a very competent performer, is no Nathan Lane, and can't carry a show.

Posted: 3/29/08 at 10:12pmJust to clarify, I wasn't wishing closing on it. I don't wish for anyone to be out of work. I was just somewhat facetiously responding to the question about when the bashing would stop.

I actually LIKE (**hides**) the show! Its not bad! Its very enjoyable while youre watching it...my only problem is ...it does not stay with you for the longest time like other musical..but again.. I thought its more enjoyable than THE LITTLE MERMAID.

That "irritating" voice is Matthew's, not Leo Bloom. That is the way he sounds. I never understood the criticism that Matthew was playing Leo Bloom. That statement appeared in Reidel's column and even people who never saw the play were saying it. The play was from the 60's and a bit dated, but it wasn't as bad as all that. Similar to YF, it wasn't great, but people seemed to take great delight in bashing it. As if to bring people who had great success down a notch.

I'm sorry for the confusion with the thread title. I sometimes get TKTS and TDF mixed up.
OT: Does anyone here know how seats are that are on the TKTS website (entertainment-link)? I have a membership, but I'm a little afraid of the seating location because at no time in the transaction does the site inform you on where your seats are located. I did not know of this when I payed for my membership.

Agreed, adamgreer.
And you know who CAN carry a show? The amazing Douglas Sills, who, sadly, auditioned for Dr. Frankenstein and got cut.
He would have been perfect. The show would still be in the sad situation it is (the score would still suck, etc., etc.), but he would have brought a much needed charm and presence special quality to the whole proceedings.

I happened to see it several times and every time it was sold out. And full.
How do you know all the filled seats were paid for and not comped? Did you look at everybody's ticket?

I was bored by Odd Couple but LOVED YF. I'm not sure, tho', that the main reason I loved YF was the cast. I think they are all amazingly good---and hope that the show can survive when they leave. I was so surprised at Megan's voice. Christopher was wonderful as Igor and Andrea Martin WAS Frau Blucher. I have tix to see this show a third time-----
It's very possible that people were ticked off by the outrageous initial ticket price, but, hopefully, they'll take advantage of the deals now and see this show. I really think most people who have seen it(that I've spoken with), enjoyed it.

Posted: 3/30/08 at 11:02amI agree that the best thing about YF is the cast, with the exception of Roger Bart. The show will not be around as long as the Producers, but it shouldn't be. It's not nearly as good. However, the show isn't as god awful as is sometimes made out to be on this board.

no snark intended ... im just confused ...

Posted: 3/30/08 at 11:11amDouglas Sills would also have given a much more enjoyable vocal performace as well, I am sure. I don't mind Bart that much, but he gets way to nasal and whiney for me sometimes.

"That "irritating" voice is Matthew's, not Leo Bloom. That is the way he sounds. I never understood the criticism that Matthew was playing Leo Bloom."
Broderick has done plenty of roles where he didn't use that voice. Go watch Glory- no iriitating nasal voice there.
"That statement appeared in Reidel's column and even people who never saw the play were saying it."
I saw the play, and it was very obvious he was doing the Leo Bloom schtick again.

Notice in your comments about the cast you didn't mention the leading actor? The supporting cast (particularly Fitzgerald and Martin) were great, but Bart simply can't carry this show, and lift it up above the mediocre material, the way someone like Nathan Lane can.

I never knew that. He'd have been much better than Bart.

Posted: 3/30/08 at 8:26pmI saw the Odd Couple too and I didn't see or hear Leo Bloom. As far as Glory goes, that was in the 1980's and he was doing a Bostonian accent. But everyone has their opinion, it is what it is.

Posted: 11/23/08 at 2:18pmwow. I never knew Sills auditioned for the part. Douglas Sills and Roger Bart are my favotite broadway stars! If Sills would have been cast as Dr. Frankenstein, and Roger stayed as Igor, it would have been perfect :]
