Posted: 11/18/03 at 7:57pmI think about this all the time. I envy the people who saw the original Oklahoma, Carousel, The Sound of Music, etc. Those are classics. But then I realize, fourty years from now, the shows I've seen will be classics. I can tell my grandchildren I experienced that.

Posted: 11/18/03 at 9:00pmAh, the sight of this generation....sitting by the fire and extolling the virtues of such hit shows as SEUSSICAL, TABOO, MAMMA MIA ("we were actually dancin' in the aisles with that one!"), AIDA, DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES...meanwhile the eyes of those grandchildren glaze over with boredom!!!!

Posted: 11/20/03 at 1:56pmno offense, DOLLY, but do you actually think you don't bore some people currently? it's all a matter of perspective. The children "years from now" will find what is fashionable now to be at best quaint, or they will take some essence of it and reintroduce it as a revival fad (much like burlesque is somewhat enjoying these days). That's the cycle of life, in any genre. Neoclassicism/Romanticism/The Avant-Garde/Minimalism, phasing past as each new group of artists "rebels".

Posted: 11/20/03 at 2:54pmwhenever people talk about "years from now" i like to remember a conversation i had with my father around the turn of the millenium. at that time he was already 85 and one day during all of the hoopla about the millenium bug and computers crashing i asked him what he thought of all of it. he told me that he remembered the way they'd envisioned the year 2000 when he was in second grade, back in 1923, "there's a whole lotta neat stuff, but overall i'm not that impressed." when i asked him why, thinking of the incredible advances we've had this century, he looked at me and said, "hell, i thought we'd all have our own spaceships by now!"

It in this sense meaning the day Taboo closes.
Sadly, my horse has cancer, and within the next couple of months she's gonna have to go to that big corral in the sky.
