whenever people talk about "years from now" i like to remember a conversation i had with my father around the turn of the millenium. at that time he was already 85 and one day during all of the hoopla about the millenium bug and computers crashing i asked him what he thought of all of it. he told me that he remembered the way they'd envisioned the year 2000 when he was in second grade, back in 1923, "there's a whole lotta neat stuff, but overall i'm not that impressed." when i asked him why, thinking of the incredible advances we've had this century, he looked at me and said, "hell, i thought we'd all have our own spaceships by now!"
