With all the negative criticism of Columbus's RENT, here's a question to ponder. If Spike Lee actually stuck with the project years ago, how do you think the film would have turned out?

"Now I may not have much, but I have more determination than any man you're likely to meet." - Big Fish
"Misdirection. What the eyes see and the ears hear, the mind believes." - Swordfish

Crap, like most of his films

when ducks grow thumbs then maybe my opinion will change.

I think Spike could have done a great job if and only if the cast remained the same! He might have added some more creativity that Columbus lacks.

He would have gone with big names. It's painful to think of Justin Timberlake, Usher, and Christina Aguilara starring in this movie. Not that Chris Columbus worked magic, but at least he kept the original cast.

What happened to Andrae?

Fan: Oh my god! You're, like, standing right there and, like, looking right at me and, like, oh my god! Anthony Rapp: Yes, that's a pretty accurate discription of reality.

Spike wanted the original cast. It was WB that wanted the pop stars.

Spike's films are never big and flashy but that's sort of the point... he's an Indie director (with a house on Martha's Vineyard) and proud of it. His films aren't crap. Do the Right Thing and She's Gotta Have It are two of the most daring and thought-provoking films of the last quarter-century. They may be preachy and offensive to some but I don't think many people could soundly argue that they're thoughtless. At least Spike takes risks and isn't afraid to challenge his audience, which is more than can be said for a lot of directors working today.

So he wanted to use the original cast? Interesting if that's true. Of course, at the time he planned to make it, their ages and appearances were not issues as they are now (with the possible exception of Daphne Rubin-Vega).

Sorry for thread jacking but i REALLY didn't want to make a whole new thread for this one question. I saw RENT for the 3rd time today and noticed what I think might be a blooper. When Roger and Mimi enter Maureen's protest they are looking around to find their friends. When the camera pans out you can clearly see Roger say something like "over there .. the guy with the glasses" I assume he's spotted Mark and they are heading over toward him. But when the camera pans out more you can see Mark leaving the stage where he stays the whole time. I know this is EXTREMELY picky and I could even be wrong in this whole thing but I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this. If not .. ignore me, lol.

Lol, Actinggbugg474, Today i also saw it for the third time and i noticed that too, but think as soon as Roger says the 'The guy with the glasses', Mimi screams out Angels name and kind of forgets about Mark, and then runs to Angel, that's why we are able to watch Mark leave because she's found the group with Angel. I'm probably wrong too, just a thought.

Back to main topic,i don't know what would have happened with Spike, but i'm happy with Chris, Very happy.

""over there .. the guy with the glasses" I assume he's spotted Mark and they are heading over toward him."

Well, I assume Mimi knows who Mark is already. (The end of Another Day, he's sort of right there). He could mean another person just for a reference...or someone with glasses as in cups...haha I know it's a stretch.

Shari Lewis: Did you ever wish upon a star? Lamb Chop: I once asked Mr. Rogers for his autograph.
