Your Feelings On The Tony's
#0Your Feelings On The Tony's
Posted: 2/23/04 at 7:58pmSince the Tony's are on a much smaller scale (only Broadway Shows competing) than say the Oscars where any movie in the world could win, what would you say is the most important reason in having them?

Posted: 2/23/04 at 8:12pmThe MOST important reason? Well, awards must be handed out for excellence in the theatre (even though, like all award shows, a lot of it is actually political) and, since they're televised (thank goodness), they open Broadway up to the rest of the country.

Posted: 2/23/04 at 8:57pmYes, Marian. I think it's important for actors in the theater to be recognized and rewarded for an amazing job. Not only does it promote theater on television, because that's not what it's about, but it really gives people who deserve recognition something: an award for excellence in a role, or in a technical job.

Exactly. :) This is exactly the reason why I look forward to June every year. Couldn't have said it better.

I watched part of the SAGawards last night and had a longing to see the Tonys.
Top 3 reasons why they beat the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Independent Spirit Awards and whatever else they come up with.
1) There are live performances from the shows nominated
2) The men kissing
3) People don't cry all the time (well at least I didn't notice a lot of it last year)

Posted: 2/24/04 at 9:51amI think it the Tony's are great, because theater doesn't get nearly as much attention as other forms of entertainment. I've been thinking lately though, that it would be great for the Tony's to add a few categories that could honor musicals and their casts that aren't new for the season. I realize it would be difficult to narrow down criteria for the nominations of awards like these, but I think it would be amazing if there were awards for actors performing in roles that they were not establishing (example would be Raúl Esparza being nominated for his performance of the Emcee in Cabaret, etc.). I even think it would be nice to see casts being nominated, regardless of the work, in some way. Again, I realize it would be difficult for this to ever happen, but I can dream. I do love the Tony's though, because they're just exciting, especially when you've seen a number of the nominated productions. It's an extra bit of glamour for Broadway.

Posted: 2/24/04 at 10:33ami would like to see the tonys become a week long 24 hour a televised event that pre-empts all rpogramming on every channel where every person who has appeared on a broadway stage in this or any other season is given an award for their contribution to humanity. the event would close with every person who's ever been involved even tangentially with a broadway show (including audience members) gathered together in a dewy meadow at sunrise singing "seasons of love" as a group while holding hands and praying for peace, well, not praying, but thinking the word peace really hard so no one is offended by the idea of prayer.

I think the Tonys are a colossal waste of time. The 'best of theater' is one of usually four or five total shows that have opened. We're ECSTATIC if we actually have enough possible nominees that not everyone gets nominated.
As a commercial for Broadway they're fine but, otherwise, being the best out of 3 possible options is hardly prestigious.

Posted: 2/24/04 at 11:01amLike most awards shows, the Tonys are basically a marketing event for Broadway. This is probably why the Best Musical award doesn't always go to the "best show" but to the most marketable (most likely to make big bucks on tour), which will probably be the case again this year with WICKED.

Posted: 2/24/04 at 12:07pmGosh, without the Tony's how would we know who was better...Kristen or Idina? I am glad there are shows like this to let me know who is the best, cuz otherwise I would not have a clue. Oh, yea, and the open-mouthed man on man mashing!
