Posted: 2/20/05 at 11:21amI will always have a soft spot for "Hello, Dolly!" - it was one of the Formative Musicals of my childhood. (I'd say that and "Music Man" were the two big ones.) I also really like the score to "Mack & Mabel," although I've never seen it performed.

My favorite Jerry Herman musical is MAME...........however,,,,,,I am also madly in love with the spectacular original Broadway production of........GOWER CHAMPION'S PRODUCTION OF Jerry Herman's HELLO DOLLY!
I hope for future generation's sake the Gower Champion Production of HELLO DOLLY! is never lost.......it is theatrical magic.

WISH, you are so right Champion's staging of Dolly is genius.
I remember reading (in C.C.'s book) that while staging "Sunday Clothes" he pinned each cast member with a color swatch from their costume to coordinate the movement patterns with the costume colors. Details...details...amazing.
And the "Hello, Dolly!" number - brilliance. Pure joy!

Ah, Jerry Herman. How can ya not smile when he takes it up for another chorus? Anywho, my fav score would have to be Mack and Mabel, but my favorite Star Turn score is Mame. I mean, ya get "It's Today!" That my friends is the best star entrance song. Bar none.

We're so fortunate to have a Jerry Herman show playing on Broadway right now. In LA CAGE, the rendition of "The Best of Times" makes audiences the true nature of a Herman showstopper. No special effects are needed: just a good robust chorus and some wonderfully executed key changes.
Jerry Herman rocks!

Posted: 2/20/05 at 7:24pmWhy, Dolly_Levi, thank you for those kind words! My writing has never been described as "magical" before. The adjectives commonly used to describe anything I put on paper are: ascerbic, vitriolic, bitter, harsh, and snide. Thank you for seeing my good side.

Albin, that comment was rude, crude and socially unacceptable--just like you.
Jerry's latest project is MISS SPECTACULAR, which was supposed to be produced at a Las Vegas venue. However, Steve Wynn backed out of the deal and now the fate of the show is in limbo.

Posted: 2/20/05 at 10:16pmI must confess that "Miss Spectacular" did not wow me. I have the concept CD, but sadly was underwhelmed. I am optimistic that it might be re-worked a bit and still have a commercial run.

CORNELIUS:
Out there
There's a world outside of Yonkers
Way out there beyond this hick town, Barnaby
There's a slick town, Barnaby
Out there
Full of shine and full of sparkle
Close your eyes and see it glisten, Barnaby
Listen, Barnaby...
Put on your Sunday clothes,
There's lots of world out there
Get out the brillantine and dime cigars
We're gonna find adventure in the evening air
Girls in white in a perfumed night
Where the lights are bright as the stars!
Put on your Sunday clothes,
We're gonna ride through town
In one of those new horsedrawn open cars
CORNELIUS & BARNABY:
We'll see the shows at Delmonicos
And we'll close the town in a whirl
And we won't come until we've kissed a girl!
DOLLY:
Put on your Sunday clothes when you feel down and out
Strut down the street and have your picture took
Dressed like a dream your spirits seem to turn about
That Sunday shine is a certain sign
That you feel as fine as you look!
DOLLY & AMBROSE:
Beneath your parasol, the world is all a smile
That makes you feel brand new down to your toes
DOLLY, AMBROSE, CORNELIUS, & BARNABY:
Get out your feathers,
Your patent leathers
Your beads and buckles and bows
For there's no blue Monday in your Sunday...
No Monday in your Sunday...
No Monday in your Sunday clothes!
CHORUS:
Put on your Sunday clothes when you feel down and out
Strut down the street and have your picture took
DOLLY& CHORUS:
Dressed like a dream your spirits seem to turn about
That Sunday shine is a certain sign
That you feel as fine as you look!
WOMEN:
Beneath your parasol, the world is all a smile
CHORUS:
That makes you feel brand new down to your toes
Get out your feathers
Your patent leathers
Your beads and buckles and bows
For there's no blue Monday in your Sunday clothes!
[Dance interlude]
CHILDREN:
Put on your Sunday clothes when you feel down and out
Strut down the street and have your picture took
WOMEN:
Dressed like a dream your spirits seem to turn about
CHORUS:
That Sunday shine is a certain sign
That you feel as fine as you look!
Beneath your bowler brim the world's a simple song
A lovely lilt that makes you tilt your nose
Get out your slickers, your flannel knickers
Your red suspenders and hose
For there's no blue Monday in your Sunday clothes!
DOLLY:
Ermengarde keep smiling no man wants some little meaning!
Ambrose do a turn, let me see!
Mr.Hackl, Mr.Tucker don't forget Irene and Minnie,
Just forget you ever heard a word from me!
All Aboard!
CHORUS:
All Aboard!
DOLLY:
All Aboard!
CHORUS:
All Aboard!
DOLLY:
All aboard!
CHORUS:
All Aboard! All Aboard! All Aboard! All Aboard!
Put on your Sunday clothes there's lots of world out there
Put on your silk cravat and patent shoes
We're gonna find adventure in the evening air
DOLLY:
To town we'll trot to a smokey spot
Where the girls are hot as a fuse!
CHORUS:
Put on your silk high hat and at the turned up cuff
We'll wear a hand made gray suede buttoned glove
DOLY:
We wanna take New York by Storm!
CHORUS:
We'll join the Astors
At Tony Pastor's
And this I'm positive of
That we won't come home
No we won't come home
No we won't come home until we fall in love!

Dolly Levi, Barbara Cook talks alot about Gower on her cd THAT CHAMPION SEASON. It is a great cd, filled with songs from Champion shows or songs that he loved.
Ms. Cook mentions that Gower was obsessed with fluid movement and wanted to "make the scenery dance." He realized those dreams with his glorious work on HELLO DOLLY!
By the way, does anyone have the MISS SPECTACULAR cd? I have never heard this Herman work but would gather it is a delight. Any of you folks familiar with the work?
p.s.
my apologies to Dolly Levi, I had not read your "underwhelmed feelings" about MISS SPECTACULAR. Anyone else familiar with the recording?

I can't say it is my favorite, but the one that has the most resonance and meaning for me is GRAND TOUR. I never saw it, but being a product of the great depression and WWII, it colors my imagination. It is also based on one of my favorite plays, JACOBOWSKY AND THE COLONEL, which told of a man's plight to find freedom in the face of adversity, but always with a sense of humor. I like the cast album, it doesn't always take flight, but for bringing back memories of WWII, it stands as a sort of favorite.

Posted: 2/21/05 at 2:45pmI am a Dolly fan, but I wish that Mack and Mabel had done better in its run (Loved it at Goodspeed). I also think that "The Tea Party" from Dear World is great. I also like "I've Never Said I Love You," from Dear World.

Posted: 2/21/05 at 3:11pmInteresting you should mention his flop Grand Tour. I'd never heard of it, but now I'm looking forward to seeing it as part of the Colony Theatre's 2005-2006 season (Burbank, CA). They did superlative versions of Grand Hotel and Side Show, so I'm pretty sure this will be a winner. And the OBC recording has been released on CD at www.fynsworthalley.com. I just ordered a copy. Can't wait to listen.
