Ladies and Gentlemen, a giant. No surprise here, but I adore Mr. Herman's work. He is a true musical artist. He crafts melodies that just stay with you and I love the way his big numbers just build and build to a soaring climax. Accessible lyrics, often clever, many touching. A class act. Glad to see La Cage back on the boards.
Your thoughts on the Work of Jerry Herman?
What's your favorite? Dolly? Mame? La Cage? Mack and Mabel? Milk and Honey? others?

Get out. I have the Mrs. Santa Claus video - a holiday tradition at my house!
Jerry and Angie Lansbury - a great pairing!

Posted: 2/20/05 at 12:23amWhat a shame the Broadway cast of JERRY'S GIRLS didn't do an album. Chita Rivera and Dorothy Loudon and Leslie Uggams. How gala is THAT?

Posted: 2/20/05 at 12:25amHello, Dolly - without a doubt. Mame would be second, with La Cage last.

The under-appreciated, but fabulous "Ribbons Down My Back" anyone?
Just thrills me, esp. when performed by Flo Lacey.

Posted: 2/20/05 at 12:38amNext to Richard Rodgers, Jerry Herman is my favorite Broadway composer. It's almost impossible for me to pick a favorite score. Of the shows I saw on Broadway, I suppose MAME was my favorite, with HELLO, DOLLY! a very close second. But then, I adored MACK AND MABEL, too. I was in a production of MILK AND HONEY, and I love that score as well. He just the best!

You hear one Herman song, you've heard 'em all.
Just kidding.
Despite the man only knowing three chords, at best, he's written some amazing scores and is no doubt on of the best theatrical songwriters ever. A superb lyricist who can write some great melodies. I'd have to say I like the La Cage score best, followed by Mack and Mabel.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.
