The end of "Aida"
SPOILER ALERT
Aida and Radames are in the tomb. The square of the tomb is the only light on stage, all around is pitch black. As they sing, the square shrinks down to size. Suddenly stars appear all around it, and what had been the window into the tomb is the brightest star in the sky. Stunning.
While it's simple as far as stage illusions go I always got a kick out of the opening to Act II in the recent revival of Finian's Rainbow and the simple dresses the dancers are wearing become fancier dresses.
