Zanna Don't!

Are there any other Zanna fans out? I think the musical is great. It's fun, catchy and I love Jai Rodriguez. Sorry if this is a bit strange but I had to express my love for this musical.

I really wanted to see it but was unable to. At least it is coming back!

I like the story, and I think the music is catchy and fun. But yikes, those lyrics. Acito apparently never met a rhyme he didn't like.

re: Zanna Don't!

Yes, it's currently being developed for Broadway under the new (working) title of just "Zanna!" I'm not sure if Jai Rodriguez will be back to play Zanna though, as John Tartaglia played the role in the recent reading, but I don't know if that's because Jai wasn't available or what. It's interesting that John is leaving Avenue Q at this time, when Zanna! is rumored to be wanting to open in Spring of 2005.

re: Zanna Don't!

Will it open in time for the Tonys? If so, do you think it will be nominated?

re: Zanna Don't!

Zanna was nominated for a Drama Desk award. It was wonderful.
I hope John is in it. He would be incredible.
Acito is a very talented man.
I just wish he would change the ending.

re: Zanna Don't!

I would assume it would be a late Tonys entry, like The Producers was a few years ago. I could definitely see it vying for Best Musical, with whoever playing Zanna up for Lead Actor.

re: Zanna Don't!

That's what I was thinking. Zanna will probably be nominated over Brooklyn.

re: Zanna Don't!

Anything will be nominated over Brooklyn.
My prediction is Ramona will get the only nomination in BKLYN.

re: Zanna Don't!

It would seem that the Best Musical category is pretty much locked up this year, with:

DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS
SPAMALOT
and
LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA

seeming to be the most likely locks at this point, and with LITTLE WOMEN, CHITTY, THE FROGS (depending on its ruling status), and ALL SHOOK UP serving as the wild card entries. I can't imagine ZANNA in the mix.

re: Zanna Don't!

I don't know, this will be a tough year for musicals...

The Frogs
Dracula
Brooklyn
Little Women
Good Vibrations
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Spamalot
All Shook Up
The Light In The Piazza
and POSSIBLY Zanna!

With that list, I see it being a close race between The Frogs, Little Women, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Spamalot, Light in the Piazza and Zanna! (if it actually opens) for those four nominations for Best Musical.

And I coubt that Brooklyn will be nominated for Musical. It's basically been the worst reviewed show of the year (close tie with Dracula). I'm sure the performers will be recognized though. At least Eden and Ramona.

I don't think Eden will get a nomination.

re: Zanna Don't!

Not to be the bearer of bad news but through a VERY reliable source I heard that plans for "Zanna!" have fallen through...at least for now. John was doing readings, but that is not why he is leaving Q. But, like I said, I believe that the plans have fallen through for a Broadway mounting of the show for now.

re: Zanna Don't!

Why not? There's four spots. One will go to Sutton Foster. That leaves three open. I doubt that any of the girls in All Shook Up or Good Vibrations give better performances. Victoria Clark is guranteed a nomination. That leaves two spots. There are no female leads in Spamalot or The Frogs, and I don't think there are any in Scoundrels or Zanna. That leaves Dracula, Brooklyn and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (left that off initially) for new musicals, along with The Wiz and Sweet Charity for revivals. (There are no female leads in La Cage) So that leaves two open spots for the stars of The Wiz, Charity and Brooklyn. Eden has been pretty raved for her performance. We'll see...

re: Zanna Don't!

There are a few women roles in Zanna and if they use the original cast they will blow Eden to trash heaven.

re: Zanna Don't!

It wouldn't surprise me, bjivie2, if Espinoza got a nomination.

However, I strongly suspect that the award is going to Victoria Clark this year, unless Christina Applegate turns out to be a revelation.

I think that the award will go to Sutton Foster.

Sutton is incredible but so is Ramona!

But as you know EVERYTHING IS ONLY FOR NOW.
Hope Zanna is on Broadway in 2005.
I saw Zanna four times. Loved it!

re: Zanna Don't!

I saw Victoria when Piazza was in Seattle, and I think she has it solid. I think the final nominations will be Eden, Sutton, Victoria and Christina.

And about those Zanna! roles...
1. None would be considered a leading actress
2. Those girls are good, but I don't think they would, "blow Eden to trash heaven."

re: Zanna Don't!

Bjivie2 I think that Sherie Renee Scott's character in "Scoundrels" counts as a lead. I haven't seen the show yet, but in the movie Christina Colgate is a big part. So, don't count Scott out for a nomination yet. She's a powerhouse and worthy of the nom.

re: Zanna Don't!

It's possible, Patty. But Sutton has a strike against her -- she just won the award two years ago. The Tony Committee tends to take things like that into account. While they did give the award to Donna Murphy twice in three years, she won the KING AND I Tony basically by default -- Julie Andrews turned down the nomination.

Clark's role in PIAZZA is huge, and she's terrific in it. She's also been around forever, and I think that the Committee will probably honor her this year.

But I'm just spitballin' here. We'll all find out in June.

B-
Ramona was incredible. If anyone from Bklyn gets a nomination it will be her.
If Eden does it will be very interesting.
