We went after the rights from the movie version because the book rights are actually the ones that were problematic. It all had to do with the way the book was sneaked out of the USSR and distributed by a communist publisher in Italy. He never had the actual literary rights. Carlo Ponti and MGM had a clearer line of title because they put one million dollars in escrow for the Pasternak family and...
Oh it's so complicated. It's almost as Byzantine as the rights for Pal Joey.
