I must have had really bad timing then. I didn't see any of that.
Cast members are required to show up and stay for a half hour until curtain. Since they can't cross the picket lines, a lot of the cast could be seen around their theatres between 1-1:30 to 2-2:30. It isn't the greatest thing to make the cast members stand outside for a half hour in this freezing weather...and from what I hear, that they don't have a say in.
they aren't allowed to even go inside? thats ridiculous

Good lord, if they're dressed properly, standing outside for half an hour isn't going to kill them. This discussion is ridiculous.
Especially with the Spring Awakening cast members who are outside signing autographs for about an hour after every show!
I get that they have to go and sign in, but why the half-hour wait afterwards?
I'm not sure if they are just required to stay until half hour and most of them got there early or if they are required to sign in and stay until curtain, but regardless, even with proper attire, it was still freaking cold out today!
Really, today was one of the warmer days this week. For God's sake, this is New York. Since when is fifty degrees any worse than a bit chilly? 50 degrees is not cold.
But, I know, when our precious performers are at hand, all becomes exaggerated!

neverandy-I recall the equity negotiations well and recall how IATSE members were making fun of the actors union negotiations backstage at shows. These guys are only in it for themselves. It's a shame and shameful.
I guess we'll see what happens when the AEA goes in for re-negotiations.
The actors get paid for standing outside the theatre for half an hour. Meanwhile, the stagehands have been out all freakin' day. If I were a stagehand and I heard some snotty actor whining about how cold they were, I'd smack them upside the head with my picket. Get some perspective.
Of course, I doubt the actors are that rude and inconsiderate.
My boyfriend works for Actors' Equity and yes, the actors are getting paid and I know EXACTLY why they went on strike and it won't be resolved anytime soon. Both sides are greedy, which is sad for EVERYONE that has bought a ticket to see any broadway show, let alone planning a whole trip around it. Local One SHOULD be ashamed of themselves. This is whole thing is disgusting.
Why should they be ashamed? If it wasn't them striking, the chances of a lockout were fairly high. Either way I believe it would have come to a halt. It was just a matter of who put their foot down first.
My point is that this solidarity needs to carry over not just through this negotiation. The more of us that stand up for our rights collectively, the better we will do individually. We can get fair pay and benefits in New York and across the country if we all decide that we aren't just "musicians" or "stagehands" or "actors". We are Brothers and Sisters! We are Union!
Once again, orangeskittles, your venomous comments are completely uncalled for.
I know that the stagehands are standing outside in the cold as well. However, isn't it their choice to strike? And yes, I understand that the stagehands are "fighting for their cause" but I really think that both sides are being greedy in this case.
I don't believe it's the choice of the actors to stand outside in the cold...although I love that some of the musicians/actors got on the line or put on impromptu performances to give something back to the people who weer unable to see any shows today.
And if this continues for weeks, it's distressing to think of how much money will be lost for BC/EFA.

That's kind of contradictory. It's not "their choice" to stand outside for a half an hour., but according to the pictures and comments posted here on BWW, there are many actors that are in support of the stagehands. Not all of them are selfishly preoccupied with a whole wasted half an hour in the freezing 50-degree weather, despite your own feelings on the matter. It's "venomous" because you don't want to admit how screwed up your priorities are.
By the way, unless you personally have spoken to every single stagehand in Local One, you can't claim this was all "their choice" either. The union leaders made the decision to strike, that doesn't necessarily mean every member agrees. Now they're out of a paycheck and that's definitely worse than any minor inconvenience the actors are experiencing.
SKittles-The membership of Local one unanimously voted in favor of a strike on Oct. 21st. While they may not have wanted to make that decision it was unanimously approved.
Yes, and it was nice to see solidarity from some of the actors for the people who make sure they are safe day after day. While I may not think the stagehands are completely justified, I was saying it's nice to see that the actors are not afraid to stand behind the stagehands if that's what they choose to do.
However, I was just saying that it sucks that the actors have to stand outside for a half hour. I would say the same thing if the stagehands had to stand outside for a half our while the actors were on strike. I was merely saying it sucks because it's cold and they weren't given a choice in the matter. And I was under the impression that it was colder in NY...I go to school in Albany where it is currently 29 degrees, which I find to be quite cold.
I am not stooping to your level and since you've never met me and don't really know me, perhaps you might want to cease and desist. :)
And in the years you've been going to school in Albany, presumably visiting NYC fairly often, you've never noticed that in the winter, it is considerably colder in Albany than it is in NYC?
Actually, Albany's weather likes to play tricks on me...iit usually is colder, but lately, so far this year, the weather has been warmer here than in the city...weird I know, but I guess it's getting back to normal now. Lucky me...:-P
Hmm maybe I should go get my camera and run down to the theatre district to get all those photos with people that I missed at the stage door. Or with all the celebrities on Broadway use this as chance to send sightings into Gawker Stalker...although anyone they'd be interested in probably sent a personal assistant to sign in for them...
Orangeskittles and Rathnait never miss an opportunity to take their misery out on the actors even when it has absolutely nothing to do with them. Bitterness is the one thing that does translate on this board, as opposed to say, sarcasm.
The actors are required to show up and sign in by THEIR union, not to walk the picket line. I also heard many of the tourists were doing the same thing as Rathnait and Skittles and were "yelling" at the actors as if this had anything to do with them at all. Stop misplacing your anger and get your facts straight.
Good for you Carryme and Bree. The actors have nothing to do with this whole situation.
I haven't been to midtown yet, but I do believe some actors are trying to do some good while this is going on. If I'm not mistaken, at Phantom they may be trying to still raise some money for BC/EFA by selling posters and other items.
