What are some books that you've always wanted to seea musical made out of? It may sound weird, but I've always wanted to see the book The Outsiders turned into one. Kinda like a combination of Grease, Newsies, and West Side Story. Anyway curious what y'all think.
(Update: I was thinking about this again, andi realized another book that could be comedy gold if transferred correctly: Jane Austen's Emma.)

I would love to see Dave Malloy take on Great Gatsby.

Okay so, I know that the title specifically asks what books should be turned into musicals, but, I'm going to throw one out there that I think would make a great play. The Giver by Lois Lowry. It would be interesting to see how they can make the scenes look monochromatic using the lighting / clothing / makeup to make people appear black & white during a portion of the play.
As for books that would make good musicals, I do agree that The Outsiders would have a nice Grease meets West Side Story vibe, if done right.
Also, since Great Comet did so well (in terms of gaining a large fanbase - despite the fact that it closed so early), I think that Anna Karenina by Tolstoy could be a very dark and dramatic musical. I'm all for light-hearted and fun musicals, but, I do love dramas and tragedies. It would appeal to a more mature audience for sure.
Oh my goodness, these are all making me swoon! I love all those books and would kill to see them onstage! One that's on my mind now (just finished it yesterday) is A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. There's no musical I know if that's it's terribly similar to, but (if they could get the tone right) I'd love to see it live.

A stage adaptation of The Giver already exists.

Woah, cool. I didn't know. Still, this has never graced a Broadway stage and it would be fascinating. Plus, it'd be interesting to see someone else's staging and direction (not that there's anything wrong with Eric Coble's - I looked up some photos of his Giver and they look amazing)
