bye bye birdie remake

i'm going to be in bye bye birdie in the fall, and i was recently searching for the video. i have to broadway soundtrack with chita rivera and dick van dyke, and when i found the 1963 video version,i liked it, but i liked the b'way soundtrack a lot better.
then i found out that there was a remake made in 1996(maybe?) and it starred vanessa williams and jason alexander. is it anymore true to the broadway show? i just want to get a feel for what the show is like. any info is much appericiated

re: bye bye birdie remake

The 1995 tv remake of Bye Bye Birdie was (I believe) much more like the show than the orginal movie. It starred Jason Alexander as Albert, and Vanessa Williams as Rosie. Our beloved Marc Kudisch was Birdie, and Tyne Daly was Mrs. Petersen. The movie itself didn't get very good reviews, but Ms. Williams did. For more info, visit the always helpful IMDb:

I am not a Jason Alexander fan.

This BYE BYE BIRDIE was okay.

I'm in it in Mass too, but not at Triboro Youth theater...I'm doing it at the Mystic Players in Medford, right next to Boston. Is that anywhere near you?

re: bye bye birdie remake

I very much enjoy the Ann-Margaret film version (but I'm a bit biased, as I was raised on it). I love it even though they took out "An English Teacher" and "Normal American Boy" (and put in some weird sideplot about a fast ballet and a crazy looking turtle). I have not seen the 95 remake, but I did accidentally purchase the music to it (thinking that I was ordering the Broadway version. Damn). A couple songs were added for the TV broadcast. I don't like them. Watch the older one, even though the plot is a bit different. Dick Van Dyke is just plain adorable as Albert.

re: bye bye birdie remake

thank you! in the broadway version two of my favorites were "an english teacher" and "normal american boy" so it was a letdown when i found out they weren't in the movie. as for jason alexander, i just like dick van dyke as albert so much, i don't know if i would like jason all that much, but hey, i'll give him a shot. thanks for all the info everyone!

PS- that turtle was a little scary

No badmouthing this version. Anything with Kudisch is brilliant. BRILLIANT, I SAY!

re: bye bye birdie remake

When I was little I wanted to be Ann-Margaret just so I could sing Bye Bye Birdie in front of the screen like the beginning of the movie.
And hang on, when did you win the discus?

re: bye bye birdie remake

I hate Bye Bye Birdie. There's a few toe tappers, but the show itself is so sexist I can't stand watching it. I know it's indicative of its time period, but it's nonetheless painful to watch.
