bye bye birdie the stage show#1

It's going to play here in San Diego at the end of the month. I've only seen the Ann Margaret movie a while back and I quite liked it. Will I enjoy the stage show? Is there huge differences?
Look I didn't use elipses!!!

Posted: 6/12/08 at 4:04pmThe song Bye Bye Birdie isn't in the stage show. I is only in the Vanessa Williams version. I think I could be wrong. i did the stage show at my high school with I was in 7th grade 6 years ago. i plyed Randolf and it was a blast. who are you playing?

Posted: 6/12/08 at 4:08pmThe differences are huge. A lot of songs cut or rearranged, entire subplots dropped, etc.
re: bye bye birdie the stage show#3
Posted: 6/12/08 at 4:09pmThe song Bye Bye Birdie was written for Ann Margaret to sing in the movie. It also was in the remake. It is not in the stage version originally.

The original cast recording will give you a plot synopsis of the show. The TV version follows the show much more than the first film which is a very entertaining B movie, make no mistake.
Alas the script has never been published to be bought retail at any rate. It sounds like you are planning to see Birdie and not be in it, correct? Go and have a ball. Check your intellect at the door and kick back and enjoy.

Come on, guys --- it's Ann-Margret NOT Ann Margaret. Geez!

One major difference is that usually in the stage play the lead is a typical high school girl, like the others -- not a Swedish bombshell in her twenties looking a good ten years older with tons of hormones more developed than all her counterparts.

The song is the show. It just has different lyrics.

Exactly, the song is "A Lot of Livin' to Do" -- and special lyrics were written for teen idol Bobby Rydell.

Posted: 6/12/08 at 6:02pmOh i'm not in the show i just want to watch it. So is the title song in the show or not because I actually like that song! I want to go into this show fresh. So i don't want to listen to the cast album or soundtrack. Like I said, I enjoyed the movie from what I remember. I saw it like two years ago I think, but I don't remember the songs, only the KIDS song and that TELEPHONE SONG (which family guy hilariousl parodied).

Posted: 6/12/08 at 7:16pmAlso, in the play, Hugo Peabody is a nerdy little fellow, not a teen idol.

In all fairness, Hugo Peabody in the film was played as a 'nerd'. Teen idol Bobby Rydell played him that way. Even sex kitten Ann-Margret made her Kim believable.
The whole theme to BYE BYE BIRDIE is that it is satire, therefore even Jesse Pearson's sleazy and greasy Conrad Birdie fit the bill. Most productions overlook this reality about the show and perform it 'straight'. Big mistake.

Posted: 6/28/08 at 2:35amso i saw the show today here in san diego... must say i was impressed... the first song about the english teacher didn't really catch my attention and kind of bored me... but after that the music was excellent... san diego just started a new musical theater company and this was their third show they have done... and they did an incredible job... almost didn't feel like a regional show at times... like it was a broadway touring company... i did miss the title song, though... good night out at the theater... so glad i decided to catch this show... hopefully a revival could do well... the only thing is that i'm not a child of the 50s so most of those references completely went over my head... oh well
