and will someone clear a space for Janney's next Emmy, she was nothing short of brilliant last night
Indeed, but she has one from this year that was a gift - shoulda been Mariska or Edie's award
(anyone else having problems with the preview option?)

It's true...
Knowing her she is and how well she can sing etc it is weird to see her on the TV - esp on a show like West Wing.

Well, Garber did do A Little Night Music during the summer, didn't he? Or have homework and lack of sleep combined to finally make me delusionally insane?
plum, plum, plum, when are you going to stop using the "homework and lack of sleep" and lack of sleep crutch and embrace your delusional grandeur?
Is there any way we can refer to Kristen Chenoweth, if we must at all, as Kristen?
i'm still partial to k-cho, m'self.

Yeah, except it's Kristin

I think she's cute and a sweet person, and fun to watch, but she's pretty much the same in every role she plays. West Wing is one of my favorite shows and I just don't see her fitting in with the rest of the cast. Her first episode didn't convince me. I guess we'll see in coming weeks.
Nope, Plum, you're not delusional -- he played Frerik at the L.A. Opera, and it was great.
I have to record WW because my roommate doesn't want to watch it (I know she could leave the room, but I'd rather watch it alone anyway) and, now, because it conflicts with Regency House Party . . . But I can't wait to watch it tomorrow and see Kristin! I'm glad she's getting such a big role, and an actress I like will be taking the press secretary job (go CJ! Go Kristin!).

Even if Kristin does play every character the same way, at least she's on a show with excellent actors. Hopefully she can learn from them and maybe find a way to get out of that cutesy corner that she is in right now.
Or she'll end up like Fran Drescher and play the same character for the rest of her life because her voice limits her.

Her voice, her height, and her hair color all make casting directors prone to typcasting her, I think. And let's face it- she does play her type to an absolute T. Plenty of actors considered "great" played only one type their entire careers- their "type" just wasn't as distinctive as Chenoweth's, so people never really fixated on it. i think she's got that helium voiced blonde bobble head niche well cornered.

That's very true Plum. Many argue that Jack Nicholson plays the same character in all of his performances. Whether or not they think he's a good actor is another argument.

Is range the only measurement of good acting? Or is being able to play a few "types" with a lot of depth, charisma, and good craftsmanship enough to make you a good actor? Updated On: 11/12/04 at 12:39 PM

Why is it always harped on when people play certain roles, if that's what they're good at? I remember reading a review of Catherine Keener, that she always plays "Catherine Keener" roles. But from what she says, she's nothing like those characters. Julia Roberts most successful films are the ones where she plays that "Julia Roberts" type of character.
Mariah Carey/Whitney Houston go out of their screaming diva albums and suddenly they can't sell records.
If someone plays the role well, why fix it if it ain't broke?

For me, that's a really hard question to answer.
IMO, I don't think that versatility is the number one asset a person must have to be an excellent actor. I admit that I do think that Julianne Moore is limited in types of roles she can play, but I consider her one of the best actresses today.
That said, sometimes I do fall for the "she/he plays the same character all the time and therefore she/he's a bad actor." It's an easy criticism to make when you don't like a certain actor, but I really do think there should be more reasons why a certain person is a bad actor.
I hoped that answered your question.
What about you? Do you think that an actor must have range in order to be considered a great actor?

I think that true range is an extremely rare asset- most actors, including ones widely considered to be good, are just playing well-disguised types. But if they play them well, and explore them, and really bring out their humanity, I don't see what's wrong with that. Unless their "type" is annoying. :)

I didn't say that I thought she was a bad actor. However, the roles I've seen her in, in Steel Pier, Epic Proportions, YAGMCB, her tv movies and her short-lived sitcom, and Wicked, now WW, she is basically the same. The roles, however, are not the same type of roles. They demand more range. I think she's good at portraying a type, but her versatility is not her strong suit. I hope that she can, as someone else stated, benefit from the talent around her on WW and grow.
They say that if the show gets picked up for next season, she may become a regular cast member... with her picture in the credits and everything! lol
My dad asked me after the show was over if she always talked that way... I just shook my head and walked away...
In terms of her "type" limiting her..I actually think Cheno is really lucky in that she is so original casting directors always remeber her(maybe for some not fondly) but she stands out...she wasn't just that 5'7" brunette who acted well but you can't really remeber because they are really similar, you remember Cheno and most of the time that's what really counts anyway.
