What is Happy Hunting?? I received a cassette recording of it for my b-day when I was young, but I think I lost it before getting a chance to listen to it.

A brilliant Merman musical with more backstage drama than quaker has oats!

Happy Hunting was the last new show that Ethel Merman did. Not terribly successful, but it did run about a year at the Imperial Theatre.

I saw it a few weeks ago when I made a thread about Happy Hunting. I'm so excited for it to come out!

And "Say, Darling" was just released a couple of weeks ago.

Not The Merm, but it's the first time it's been on CD.

No, she did "Gypsy" after "Happy Hunting".

You could say that "H.H." is the show that kept Stephen Sondheim from writing words and music for "Gypsy".

After her experience with Dubey and Karr (After making some comment on how she should sing one of their songs, she said to the director that they were not to speak to her again. Ever.), Merman did not want to work with another neophyte composer.

So, that's why Jule Styne was added to the "Gypsy" staff.

And after writing "We Take The Town", a musical about Pancho Villa that closed out of town, even with Robert Preston in it, they disappeared off the face of the earth.

(I only know of two songs from it that ever got recorded. Barbra Streisand sang "How Does the Wine Taste" and the songs "Silverware" was recorded on one of their albums of songs from shows that closed out of town.)

"A coherent existance after so many years of muddle" - Desiree' Armfelt, A Little Night Music "Life keeps happening everyday, Say Yes" - 70, Girls, 70 "Life is what you do while you're waiting to die" - Zorba

Happy Hunting did not play the Imperial unless it transfered there late in the run. It was at the Majestic, next door to the Broadherst where "Auntie Mame" was playing. I saw both so know the theaters I saw them at.
Unless I am reading a previous post incorrectly and the poster was calling Merman brillant. HH was probably the worst show Merman was ever connected with.

Thanks for the correction to my stupid error and to puppetman for correcting the theatre. It's the last time I'll answer something here without really thinking about it :)
