Hmmmm, my mama, "Dutchie" Varley was born in 1932, I "googled" the year and this is a few of the musicals that set the footlights of Broadway ablaze that year..

"Irving Berlin returns to Broadway to write "Face the Music"; the spoof contains the upbeat tune "Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee."

"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" by E. Y. Harburg and Jay Gorney appears in a revue called "New Americana"; it becomes the anthem of the depression.

Ziegfeld revives "Show Boat" on Broadway, featuring Paul Robeson as Joe; Ziegfeld dies in Hollywood later in the year, several million dollars in debt."

TOP BANANA has a fabulous number "If You Wanna Be A Top Banana, You Got To Start At The Bottom Of The Bunch"

I think some of us "experienced" will sing this to a young "up 'n comer"

I think for the next concert you should actually have the moms come and sing too...

No, THAT she won't be singing!

Speaking of singing...this little ditty is from the 1932 Irvin Berlin musical, FACE THE MUSIC-

How Can I Change My Luck
[Apparently written for, but not used in, the show.]

I've looked 'round for a lucky charm of the popular kind
That would keep me away from harm, they're not easy to find
Four leaf clover and rabbit's feet lucky as they may be
May help others, but I repeat, they have never helped me

The rabbit's foot that I found one day
Was on a rabbit that ran away
Ooh, ooh, what'll I do?
How can I change my luck?

The four leaf clover I stooped to pick
Was poison ivy and made me sick
Ooh, ooh, what'll I do?
How can I change my luck?

I hung a horseshoe right over my bed
Down came the horseshoe on top of my head

The lucky star that I long to see
Is shining somewhere, but not for me
Ooh, ooh, what'll I do?
How can I change my luck?
How can I change my luck?

I think I've found my song!

My options are:

Coco
Oh Calcutta
The Fig Leaves Are Falling
Dear World
1776

So perhaps "Sit Down, John"
or perhaps "The World Belongs to the Young"

You just never know...

If we go with my birth year ('86), I'd be out of luck, I don't know a single song from any shows that opened that year! But, since we are going with mother years, I'd probably sing something from Fiddler (thanks, Mom, for being a youngin'!). Any of the guy songs would be fine with me, all are in my range (except the last note of 'Now I Have Everything')

Songs my mother should know~* (She loves this topic, by the way)

1955:
Plain & Fancy
Silk Stockings
Damn Yankees
Finians Rainbow

Oh yeah, she's totally singing "Whatever Lola Wants." Though she'd fight me for "How are things in Glocca Mora?"

Fun topic.

My mom was born in 1955: I'd have to go with Damn Yankees, as it's the only one on the list I could sing from.

I was born in 1980: ooh! 42nd Street, Camelot, Music Man,

JOHN LITHGOW I just realized, your last name is Butz! Both "Norbert" AND "Butz" are in your name! You must have gotten picked on a lot as a child!
