After reading all these posts it would be safe to say the following: Sutton doesn't mind signing/taking pics/etc. before the show at the stage door and does NOT like to be bothered after the show !!
She's too big a star to deal with her fans at this point. It's really too bad, she used to be a total sweetie to her fans. She could really benefit from taking her cues from stars like Idina Menzel who don't let the fame go to their heads.

When I saw Drowsey she didn't come out the stage door, and another cast member said that she usually left via a different exit

Today I went to try and catch her before the evening performance (apparently she's not doing Wednesday and Saturday matinees due to a sore arm, according to a worker at the stage door). And the weirdest thing happened. She came, but she was holding her dog in her arms, so I didn't know how to approach her. Obviously she couldn't sign. She didn't look very approachable either. It was obvious that I was waiting, and I stood up straight as she approached. She just looked at me and went in. What do you suggest for approaching her in that situation?
I ask because I'm only in NY for another week, and I don't want to miss this opportunity.

I really wish people wouldn't ask celebrities for autographs. Reading threads like this is totally creepy.
I heartily agree Michael Bennett...
Yes sutton does, and she is a glorious conversationlaist I may also add.
I got a regular picture with her. But this dude in front of me got one with her doing the "Millie" pose.

What is the "Millie" pose?
And when did you get your picture with her?
I know I've mentioned this before, but if someone (in this case, Sutton) doesn't come out of the stagedoor at the end of the show, isn't it a reasonable assumption that she probably doesn't really want to see fans before the show either? I don't doubt that she's sweet with fans who catch her on her way into the theater, but just because she doesn't explicitly say that she minds fans approaching her on the way to work doesn't mean she's truly thrilled about it.
While I've wanted Sutton to sign something for quite a while, I wouldn't feel comfortable approaching her on her way into the theater. "
I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. I have met Sutton several times before the show and she's more than gracious to pose for pictures and sign and talk. She's VERY sweet, and even introduced me to her dog.
One person after the show when I went 2 weeks ago, though, asked every single cast member if Sutton was coming out. Kecia explained to her that she normally doesn't because she gets "mobbed like as if she was the Beatles" if she comes out after. She also said Sutton wasn't able to handle that sort of thing, and honestly, who could? Normally before the show there aren't that many people there so it's not like she can get mobbed. She's VERY sweet, though, and I hate when she gets the reputation of being snobby or a diva because she doesn't come out after. Catch her before, and she'll be more than happy to sign autographs and take pictures.

Again, just because someone smiles and appears sweet doesn't mean that they actually want to talk to you or are happy that they were stopped on their way to work. I'm not claiming that there's no possible way that she actually enjoys speaking with fans before the show and while still wanting to avoid them after the show, but I still think that if she genuinely wanted to meet her fans, she'd see them at the stagedoor in the traditional setting.
And honestly, I've been to the Drowsy stagedoor multiple times. I've never seen it extremely crowded; it's hardly a mob scene, and Drowsy isn't the type of show that invites mob scenes at the stagedoor (like Wicked or Rent) anyway. She doesn't come out the stagedoor because she doesn't want to sign autographs. Period.
Look, I LOVE Sutton. I think she's a wonderful performer. However, the "I stopped her on her way to work and she was nice" excuse really doesn't work - not to mention that there have been a handful of people who stopped her on her way to work and felt she was less than approachable. I've seen way too many people put the woman on a pedestal.

I saw Sutton walking with her dog in a carrier when I was waiting at TKTS. I would have loved to have said hello and that I thought she was a great performer, but I didn't want to bother her and sound like a butt-kiss. Plus, I probably would have come off as extremely creepy.

mobbed???? Drowsy gets how many - 50 people?
want to talk mobbed? try the stage door when Julia Roberts was in 3 Days of Rain
honestly, she has too big sense of her own self-importance
in the field of entertainment, Sutton Foster is a speck
It's not the number of fans that counts. It's the level of their "fandom."

I'm sure Julia Roberts has those fans too.
Still think it is overinflated ego.
Don't think she's "all that" in Drowsy Chaperone anyway.

It's normally 20 TOPS. If that.
I once saw her exit the stage door, slip by everyone and run to the other side to avoid. Not commenting, just reporting.
