i searched and couldn't find anything....
since i saw apple tree last week, i was interested how kristin chenoweth doesn't pose for pics after the show since it's late, cold, she has a life, etc
even though sutton foster isn't as famous as kristin because she hasn't had as much television exposure, but she still certainly has an enormous fan club from broadway nerds like me and many others. i assume she may because her website has pics with her and fans, but i'm just wondering if she always does when she signs programs and whatnot after the show? clearly she and cheno would if someone caught them at the stage door BEFORE the show...
just wondering. thanks!

She doesn't typically exit the stagedoor after the show.

I went on Saturday, and after all the big production the SD guy made, I was expecting Kristin to be... diva-ish. She was the exact opposite. She was so sweet.
As far as Sutotn, no clue. She used to.
Go to the stage door around an hour before a performance of DROWSY and Sutton will be more than happy to take pictures with you.

Do actors mind when you try to catch them before a show? I would imagine it to be kind of awkward. Standing there as they are trying to walk in...

It really depends on the actor. I don't recommend it unless you know the actor doesn't mind. It'd kind of rude to get someone as they are going into work. But I have heard Sutton doesn't mind, and I really wanted to meet Sherie Rene Scott and someone told me she didn't mind if you caught her before and she was so sweet. So I would only do it if you know the actor is ok with it.

I've seen Sutton walking down the street numerous times - I bumped into her once, another time her dog walked over to me and started sniffing me - and she couldn't have been nicer.
When I saw Drowsy Sutton didn't come out of the stage door. Someone who worked with the show said that she generally doesn't. But when I saw The Apple Tree, Kristin did pose for pictures! She was incredibly sweet and good natured about it.

I know I've mentioned this before, but if someone (in this case, Sutton) doesn't come out of the stagedoor at the end of the show, isn't it a reasonable assumption that she probably doesn't really want to see fans before the show either? I don't doubt that she's sweet with fans who catch her on her way into the theater, but just because she doesn't explicitly say that she minds fans approaching her on the way to work doesn't mean she's truly thrilled about it.
While I've wanted Sutton to sign something for quite a while, I wouldn't feel comfortable approaching her on her way into the theater.

She's very nice, no matter when you catch her.
And if she isn't thrilled about it, then she's one helluvan actress.
Funny story, actually. I was in NYC, and I had just gotten done with my school's production of Millie the week before (I was Graydon), and I knew I would be seeing Drowsy, so I really wanted to meet Sutton and get my Drowsy program signed. I met someone at the Les Miz stage door, and figured out that the only way to meet her was to wait before the show at the stage door. So I got there, and waited for about ten minutes. After ten minutes or so, Sutton came out with her dog (Cutest dog. Ever. period.). I said "Umm... Ms Foster...?" and she said "Hold on!" rather meanly and walked away. About three minutes later she came back all smiles and said "I'm really sorry! I just had to get her to pee!".
Then we talked for a few minutes about Millie and such. I was just really pissed off that I forgot my camera!!! I got her autograph, but it was the day that BC/EFA was taking donations, so I bought a $20 Playbill signed by the cast... so I had two autographs from her.
But DAMNIT I met her for one of them!
Long story short? She was extremely sweet... just don't catch her when her dog needs to pee.
P.S.~ Right after Sutton re-entered the theatre, Beth Leavel and the understudy Kitty bursted from the stage door and SPRINTED across the street and into the Booth Theatre. God knows why.

Yep.
I saw Sutton in Millie in 2003 and just fell in love with her, but I didn't get to meet her afterwards cause my mom didn't think there would be a SD at the hotel and I guess they were in a hurry.
So, the last time we went to NYC, three years later it was basically so I could see Sutton in Drowsy and meet her. First off we happened to be there when Drowsy did Broadway in Byrant Park. Sutton was the only one not there. I was mad and scared that Sutton wouldn't be in the show that night. So I asked Jennifer Smith and she said she would be. That made me happy.
Of course I figured that Sutton would be coming out of the SD after Drowsy, so once it was over my friend and I pretty much ran to the SD, getting lost on the way. I met most of the cast but no Sutton. After a while some people started to chant her name and one guy in Drowsy said to yell to Sysco, a guy who worked at the SD. They did, he came out, he was really nice and he went to see if Sutton was going to come out. She was gone. So once everyone else left I walked up to him almost in tears to ask if she really was gone or if he was just saying that. She was really gone. I told him how I waited three years to meet her and all that, and he really felt bad for me. He was really sweet. So he went inside to check what time Sutton usually gets to the theatre and he was like "tell you what, if you come to the theatre tomorrow at about 6 you should be able to meet her coming in." So I was excited, and thanked him.
The next day we got there at about quarter to six and he remembered us right away. He told us that she wasn't here yet, but she should be in a little while. So at about 6:30 mom said to me: "Darci, isn't that Sutton walking down the street?" It was! I walked up to her and she read my shirt, which was the Show Off one and she was just really nice. I told her how I really wanted to meet her after the show last night but she didn't come out and she was like "Aww, I'm sorry". Then I told her that I saw her in Millie and I've loved her ever since and she acted touched. And I got a hugging picture with her and an autograph. Plus I made her a DVD and she acted excited when I gave it to her. She was just talking to my parents and I and joking around. She thanked me a bunch of times and she was just so sweet!
I really don't think she minds fans meeting her before. She's just so down to earth and sweet!

The same thing happended to me last Sunday. I was thinking of going back before a show. Thanks for your story.
I actually had the pleasure of meeting her this weekend. I was in the city for the day and on the way to the city I remembered someone telling me that you can meet Sutton Foster if you wait by the The Drowsy Chaperone's Stagedoor before a matinee. So, I realized I had time to so I did. I got to the stagedoor about 12:00 and waited. I saw other actors going in and thought maybe she got there already, but I waited just in case. I waited for about 35 min, I think? And, I sort of said to myself "okay, I'll give her another five min. and if she's not here... oh well, I guess." Ironically I look up and there's Sutton walking her dog towards the door. She passes me. (Now, I realize it's her and I'm SMILING like no other.) And while passing me, she says "Hello!" And still in awe I sort of get out a "Hi!" She passes me then sort of back tracks and says "Do you want me to... (motions signing an autograph)..." I say "Could you?!" She laughs and says "Sure!" I took out my school notebook because that's all I had and she signed!!!!! I even asked her if she could sign for two of my friends and she did. And I got a picture with her!
Anyway, she is SOOO sweet!!!!! And, I think, she's pretty thankful for all her fans!

Each time I've met Sutton, she's been incredibly sweet. I've got a couple photos with her(once at Little Women and once at Drowsy) and her autograph. The last time I met her was after one of Drowsy's Monday performances during previews and she came out and signed and saw I was wearing a Drowsy Chaperone hat and she grabbed the hat and said to me "We have hats?" It's was really cool, and not to sound cliche, but I never washed that hat again.
On the subject of getting something signed before, I've only done that with Hugh Jackman during the run of The Boy From Oz because not that many people waited before the show, and usually when you got out to the stage door, there would already a good amount of people there waiting for him, and he was very nice about signing before the show. So, I would only try before the show, if I knew the person I was looking to meet didn't mind.

This is a little unrelated, but it's a cute Sutton story. I went to see Little Women on the first day they sold programs. I was apparently the first person to take a program to the stage door. I don't think most of the cast had seen it because they all flipped through it. When Sutton came out she flipped through it and when it came to a disply of three different pictures of her, she pointed to them and made a face, saying "dork, dork, dork" about each picture. It was kind of funny.
To relate this to the topic, she always seemed more then happy to meet fans. I have a picture with her outside the Millie, Little Women, and Chaperone stage doors. (For The Drowsy Chaperone, I did get her before the show, at around 7 on a Wednesday matinee day.)

Saw Drowsy back in the summer and Sutton did not come out stage door after the show. She goes out a side door and back in the summer used to run over to Spamalot to meet up with Christian. If you saw her come out side door (a friend of ours did) and asked for a picture or autograph she would not oblige. We were told if you catch her before the show (about an hour and half), she will take pix and sign. We were there this past weekend and got to the door between matinee and evening shows. We figured she probably didn't leave after matinee, but thought we'd wait anyway. Waited about a half hour and she came out to walk her dog. We spoke to her and she said she would be right back. She did come back, signed, posed and talked for a bit. She was very nice, but not as friendly as when we met her at Millie She was an absolute sweetheart then. Maybe it's the Tony. Georgia Engel nevers signs. The stage door people told us that. A friend caught her leaving out a different door one night and she refused to sign, but he pleaded for a picture and he got one.

Your friend actually tried to catch her at the side door? I think it's bad enough when people wait for actors on their way to work who don't exit through the stagedoor, but isn't it common sense that if someone makes a point not to exit through the stagedoor after the show, they probably don't want to see you after the show, period? I'm not saying that it's "correct behavior" or what she should be doing by any means, but if she chooses not to interact with fans after the show, it's her right. (Not blaming you, BroadwayBaby2004, but I don't agree with your friend's actions at all)
Like I said earlier in the thread, I've wanted something signed by her for a while now. She didn't exit the stagedoor (as expected) on the day I saw Drowsy. It was a matinee show, and I asked the stagedoor attendant if I could leave my poster there for her to sign at her own leisure - I'd be willing to pick it up later. The attendant was very firm in saying that she doesn't exit the stagedoor at any time and would not sign the poster, even if I left it for her. It's completely possible that the attendant just didn't want to deal with the "trouble" of giving the poster to her (and if not, I personally disagree with Sutton's policy), but at any rate, I refuse to hunt her down at other times. For me, the stagedoor is the time to communicate with performers who wish to do so... and if they don't, I guess that's just one autograph I won't get.

Siamese Dream - Read my post again. It says "If you saw her come out side door (a friend of ours did) and asked for a picture or autograph she would not oblige." My friend saw her coming out the side door. He wasn't stalking her there. He was walking under the hotel drop off area on the way back to his hotel. You're absolutely correct. If she wanted to sign an autograph for people, she would come out the stage door and do so. In that respect, I wouldn't be asking the stage door attendant to take your poster and get it signed for you. If she wanted to sign an autograph, she would come out of the stage door and sign it for you.
yeah she does take pictures. She's really nice.

I assumed that your friend saw her coming out of the door because s/he was waiting there. Considering I've heard various stories of people waiting at side doors for performers who don't exit the stagedoor, it's not such a stretch. Apologies for the misunderstanding.

That's an entirely different scenario, though. It's pretty common for fans to write to their favorite performer and ask for their autograph, and as far as I know, Sutton generally replies to fans' autograph requests in that manner. Perhaps she doesn't want to sign autographs in person but, on the other hand, doesn't mind signing them at her own leisure. There's a huge difference between shoving a poster in her face on her way to work or at a side door and asking her to scribble her name on a poster when she has the time. At any rate, the poster is still unsigned.

When I saw Drowsy she came out (I waited for like 20 minutes) and was SO SWEET. She signed autographs for everyone and took pictures with those who had cameras!
