I saw drew sarich play javert on saturday night. I saw that he also played javert on sunday as well. Is this his first time as javert?
He played the part well. I notice some differences between Norm and him.
During the death of fantine scene, he hit the post of fantine's bed with his bar while he was chasing alex. During stars, his prayer came much later than norm's.
During his death scene, he climbs over the bridge much later than norm. His scream at the end was very loud but good.
Overall, I thought he did a good job.
than norm. thank norm. than norm. than norm.
Norm's not in the show anymore.
DRSisLove, was there a point to your post (other than to be a jerk)? People still compare every Elphaba to Idina and she's been gone for 3 years. Norm's only been gone a week; there's nothing wrong with comparing Drew's performance to the one freshest in everyone's mind.
Saw him. Didn't expect to love him, but I did. He's excellent.
Saturday matinee was his first performance as Javert.

Norm did the bed rapping thing. I'd love to hear a more indepth review if anyone can supply one.
orangeskittles - I agree. Just because Joanna Gleason is not playing The Baker's Wife doesn't mean every actress who plays the role isn't compared to her. Just because LuPone isn't playing Eva Peron, Idina isn't playing Elphaba, Len Cariou isn't playing Sweeney Todd, Nathan Lane isn't playing Max Bialystock...
Eh, I understand your point but at the same time Norm didn't originate Javert. Countless actors have played him over the years. It's not like Norm's was the difinitive Javert. I don't really have a point here, I'm just sayin'...
But Norm did originate him in this "revival".
But norm is thebestever
Benjamin Lily Rosenbloom, I will not disagree with that statement.
regardless of who's playing him in this revival... at the end of the suicide... the lighting is beautifully done... it's visually exciting... but when I saw it on March 10th... Norm kind of did a swimming... motion on the turntable as he was drowning... I understand the "swirling whirpool effect..." but.. the pantomimed swimming was really awkward.... does every Javert do that? Is it left over from the original, or new to this time around?

I don't recall that swimming thing being in the original, all I remember was blackness engulfing him.....you like periods don't you?.......
I've never seen a Javert "swim." I mean, at that point, remaining alive is not very high on his list.
How was Drew's chemistry with Alex?
I would like to be in the middle of a DrewAlex sandwich. Mmmm.
How was Drew's chemistry with Alex?
Very angry. I mean, Norm shouted a lot but he didn't convey his anger/confusion/what-have-you very well, whereas Drew's Javert is delightfully psychotic when he loses his temper. Which, to his credit, isn't that often--I think once in the Confrontation, once in reaction to Alex's anger when he let Javert go, and then he lost it completely in the Suicide. For my part, I dislike how angry Alex's Valjean is in general, so Drew encouraging him wasn't really a good thing.
Drew wasn't really playing a psychotic Javert though--mostly he was contemptuous and icily dignified, which looks a little strange on him but whatever. But he was quite violent when sufficiently provoked.
Thanks. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. So he wasn't manhandled as much as Norm was? lol...
Although I have to say that I always thought Alex's Valjean was a little passive, especially in act 2. And in act 1, he didn't really come across as that angry to me, just more obsessive compulsive than anything else. But maybe that's just me.
Javert swam when I saw the tour last in LA. I thought it was hysterically stupid.

Poppinslionking, please give a review of the new Enjolras, Madame Thenardier, and Eponine.
I think what you guys misinterpret as the baclstroke or something is just the Javerts pantomiming falling from a bridge...
If you were falling from a bridge...wouldn't you probably flail your arms? I doubt onlookers would say "oh look at that person who just jumped from that bridge, why are they trying to swim?"
If I were falling from a bridge, I'd flail. If I were jumping from a bridge, I doubt I would.
Also, Idina left Elphaba behind four months ago, and Philip Quast = best Javert kthxbai. ^_^
How was Doug Kreeger as Marius? He went on 4/29.
I love LES MIZ. I like Drew. I'm glad to hear he seems do perform Javert well.

Drew is scheduled to perform as Javert May 11-13.
I wonder if he'll be on at all this week as well.
Why was/is/(will be) Ben Davis out?
p.s. I think Javert's "swimming-like" arm movements are actually arms flailing while sinking beneath the water. Hard to portray while acting like you're not above the two-dimensional surface of the stage.
Anyone else have to keep themselves from running up onstage and humping this man when he's performing?
Well, not quite that extreme, but you know. Yum-EE!
I think Julian's best friend is Mr. Ellipsis.
I don't recall him "swimming" when I saw the show.
