Posted: 2/23/05 at 11:43pmIs there a recording of this musical? I know it's a melting together of two muscials by William Finn, but is there one of the actual show?
re: falsettoland#1
Posted: 2/23/05 at 11:44pmYes. It is the second half of "March of the Falsettos" cd.
re: falsettoland#2
Posted: 2/23/05 at 11:46pmFALSETTOS is the "melting together" of the two shows, March of the Falsettos, and Falsettoland. While the melted, slightly altered version is not available on CD, there is a box set that includes Part 2 (March of the Falsettos) and Part 3 (Falsettoland) of the Marvin Trilogy. They are also available to buy separately, as is In Trousers, the first part (and an AMAZING AMAZING piece of work).

There's a recording of Falsettoland's OOBC, too. That's the one I have.
ETA- Shoot, I've been rendered redundant. :)

Posted: 2/24/05 at 12:00amSo Falsettoland is all three of those or just the second part of March of the Falsettos? I don't understand why they changed it. or how all that went down.
re: falsettoland#5
Posted: 2/24/05 at 12:02amI'm not sure that Trina's song in FALSETTOS, "I'm Breaking Down" is on the cast album but Alison Fraser recorded it as part of her cabaret act.

Part 1- In Trousers (off off Bway)
Part 2- March of the Falsettos (off Bway)
Part 3- Falsettoland (off Bway)
Falsettos was the melding together of Parts 2 and 3 into a Broadway musical.
When someone refers to all three, it is usually as "The Marvin Trilogy" or sometimes, "The Marvin Songs".

I'm Breaking Down is the bonus track on the In Trousers CD.
Again, I cannot recommend In Trousers enough.

Fraser's version of "I'm Breaking Down" was lifted off her solo album "New York Romance" and put on the In Trousers cd.

Haha. Well, I DEFINITELY feel your pain. I always have a long list...
But these are seriously a must have. William Finn is an effing GENIUS.
re: falsettoland#11
Posted: 2/24/05 at 12:17amThe Falsettoland portion has Faith Prince as Trina and Danny Gerard (Brooklyn Bridge) as the kid.

Posted: 2/24/05 at 12:32amIN TROUSERS is the strangest CD I can't stop listening to. I can't explain why I like it but there's just something to it. It's amazing to see Finn's growth as a composer between IN TROUSERS (which he admits isn't that good) and ELEGIES.

Posted: 2/24/05 at 1:05amWhat's Elegies? Is it sort of like Jason Robert Brown's Songs for a New World?
re: falsettoland#14
Posted: 2/24/05 at 1:12amit's like SFANW in that there's only music and there is no plot. it's unlike Brown's amazing piece in that there is a common thread holding the songs together- they are all autobiographical pieces for people that have died from Finn's own life. it's a tiny cast and includes a beautifully diverse set of solos, duets, trios, etc commemorating everything from Finn's mother to Joseph Papp to the Korean storeowners from Finn's childhood to Jack Eric Williams to the dogs he's lost to the people killed on 9/11. it's fabulous!

I wouldn't say there's no common thread holding SFANW together -- the vast majority of the songs are about being at a crossroads or a threshold of change.
I just ordered ELEGIES and the box set of FALSETTOS -- I can't wait for them to arrive!

For those in the L.A./Orange County area, I've just learned that there will be a production of Falsettos in June!!! I'm hoping/planning to see it at least twice as I'm a huge fan of the work.
Falsettos at Costa Mesa Playouse in June!!!

Posted: 2/24/05 at 6:13amOne of my most beloved shows ever (Hence the name there). The OOBC is fantastic and if you can see it live...you must! Only show guaranteed to make me cry like a baby every time.

re: falsettoland#19
Posted: 2/24/05 at 9:55am'FALSETTOLAND'. Did you catch Blackbird's production of Falsetto's at 'chapel'? Twas the most disgraceful thing I have seen in my 24 year old existance!
re: falsettoland#20
Posted: 2/24/05 at 10:04amI heard the word 'grotesque' applied to one of the performances in that production, scotty...

Posted: 2/24/05 at 11:46amI just got this CD the other day and I am in love with it. I looked on IMBD and it said that Carolee Carmello was in the OBC. I wish they made an OBCR just so I could hear her wonderful voice singing these amazing songs.
re: falsettoland#23
Posted: 2/24/05 at 11:52amWas the decision to not make an OBCR of FALSETTOS only based on the fact that there were off-Broadway recordings of the two halves?

Carolee was Cordelia. Janet Metz is on the origianl Off-Broadway recording. At some point, Maureen Moore also played Cordelia.
