re: first Lennon review...BAD?

I got the impression that Pat Craig doesn't really care for John Lennon in general, nor does he care for 60s protest music. I also apparently was seeing an entirely different show, since the one he saw had Cynthia Lennon being played as a twit. (?)

I'm not saying that the show doesn't have problems, but it seems to me that Mr. Craig might have some of his own. re: first Lennon review...BAD?

I agree. But, if it's any indication, then critics are either gonna love it or hate it (maybe same with the audience too). Some people just don't agree with whole peace movement...even though it's in the past.

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

At Talkinbroadway there are a couple of "audience" reports from last night's opening, with both finding things to enjoy but both basically offering a statement along the lines of "There is no way this is going to run on Broadway."

It would seem to be a pretty tourist friendly show (at least in the Lennon recognition factor) but I confess having no interest in seeing it.

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

Forget him then.

I think one factor is that if one does not know anything about John Lennon, I don't think he's going to know all the references.

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

I don't understand how you could sleep through it, seeing as many numbers are quite loud. re: first Lennon review...BAD?

It's an offbeat show. I don't think this is going to be the only bad review, although I think there will probably be reviewers who appreciate it as well.

I don't think anyone can sleep through any performance, if they wanted to stay awake. I think the people that do just intentionally ignore the performance itself and force themselves to sleep.

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

I agree.

I hope they put up a huge sign in front of the theater saying, "NO. This is NOT about The Beatles. If you want that, go to McCartney's concert."

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

Yes, because judging a production from one photo (which I don't think is from the production as it's staged) is the best way to make a decision about said production.

It's a weird show. Not everyone is going to like it, and it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Enjoy your baiting, though. re: first Lennon review...BAD?

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

I think it might be a good show. I have enjoyed Lennon songs. And many many people do love his stuff.

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

I thought the Chronicle review was actually quite accurate. In the second half, I did feel less involved than the first half (though I'm not sure whether it's because of the songs though).

Good review though! I hope that the production team will learn from these performances and make the Broadway one a much greater production. :)

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

I rather liked "I Don't Want to Lose You," but other than that, I agree that the Chron is pretty accurate. The show reaches rather far and doesn't always get to where it wants to go, but it's in the early stages yet and already miles better than other jukebox musicals I have seen. I suspect that a song or two will be changed or removed at some point, and I really hope that the whirling cherry-blossoms during "Real Love" go away. Luckily they have a strong cast to support the show while they tweak it.

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

LOL! I remember thinking how cheesy the cherry blossoms were!

I hope they don't take out Mother. That was truly great.

Was it just me or were the songs toward the second half kind of random??? Like, I felt the first half did a pretty good job at connecting the songs to the story as it progressed. And yet, the second half seemed to have just random Lennon songs that did not really lead the story anywhere (until Yoko and John got back together and then he died).

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

Is there any chronological plot or ordering, or is each number pretty much separated from each other with blurbs at the beginning and end to give it context? I don't know if that makes any sense. I just mean does it tell a story from beginning to end, or is each song and the story behind it told as a snapshot not related to the others?

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

Generally, it does. It starts out with Lennon's birth and then the death of his mother (thus the song "Mother"). Then it gets to the Beatles storyline...and his love story with Yoko...and it all leads toward to his death.

I just felt the second half wasn't constructed as well as the first half.

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

It's more or less chronological from Lennon's birth to his death. There's a "flashback" to meeting the Maharishi, and there is obviously time compression and things left out, but it's generally chronological.

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

Thanks! I'm really excited about seeing this show. I'm just having a hard time trying to figure out what to expect. I'm glad that there's some cohesion between the songs instead of just being a campy jukebox musical.

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

It's a really hard show to describe, but I would definitely say that it's worth a look. I don't expect that everyone will like it, but it's by no means another "Mamma Mia" or anything like that. Most of the dialogue is from Lennon himself, and the story is his life through the prism of his time.

Just hopefully by the time others see it, the whirling cherry blossoms of doom will be gone. re: first Lennon review...BAD?

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

Oh good. A Mamma Mia-type plot (or lack thereof) is what I was concerned about.

I wish I was in SF to see it in previews! What, if anything, would you anticipate that they change by/in Boston and New York? I tried to buy NYC tickets for Lennon and my birthday (10/9), but they stop the Sunday shows after September! re: first Lennon review...BAD?

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

Personally, I believe they will change stuff around.

Afterall, they were still making changes all the way up till the opening. And based on the critics reviews and my own personal opinion, there's room for improvement.

As Shawk said, I hope the cherry blossoms will be gone (though that may not happen). I think they may take out a song or two from the 2nd half. The story may (should actually) be stronger. I don't have the program with me so I don't remember exactly what songs were sung.

I just hope that they won't suddenly replace the actors or something.
#23

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

I wouldn't expect the actors will be changed, mainly because even if the story was shoddy, the calibre of the cast is the show's biggest selling point anyway (aside from, you know, the Lennon thing). What point does the second act begin?

re: first Lennon review...BAD?

I suspect they might shuffle out some songs and shuffle in some new ones. I wasn't that keen on "Crippled Inside" both because of the wacky clown suits and because I felt the point had already been made in the dialogue, so if that was changed somehow, that would be fine.

They might add more dialogue here and there, also. I also would guess they'd continue to refine how the projections are used. It's really hard to tell. But with how strong the cast is now, I don't think they'll be replacing anyone unless one of the actors wants to leave the show.

Oh, and, Act One ends with "New York City," with Lennon hopeful about living in the US. The second act opens with "Power to the People" and quickly heads into the David Frost Show, Jerry Rubin, etc.
