#0first time RENT experience (review) sorry for posting twice it didnt work
Posted: 4/2/05 at 9:17pm

sorry it didnt work the first time.

so today at the saturday matinee was the first time i ever saw RENT and let me tell you its so much better than wicked (i was in love with wicked more before i saw rent today) so i had row b seats in the mezzanine but ma mom spotted 3 seats in row cc of the mezzanine so we took those and they were in the center. much better seats than we bought. (it starts row aa-ee than starts row a-whatever other rows) ok so now actors/actresses and their characters

Roger Davis (cary shields) i was wondering if many rogers have tatoos? he did but im wondering if others have them.ok so the review he was really good. he had a lot of expression and connected well with roger. he was great and he just stole parts in the show

mark cohen (matt caplan) he was very good too.he was great as mark and but a lot of effort into the performance.

tom collins (destan owens) his collins was cool. i loved how well he worked with justin johnston (angel) his voice wasnt as deep as i was used to but it was enjoyable to watch him the only time the voice bugged me was when he said happy birthday jesus during youll see becuase im so used to it being really deep.

benny (d'monroe) his benny was cool and so i thought he acted and sang well i just didnt see much expression but it was a great performance for him

joanne jefferson (merle dandridgea) she played a good joanne. she sounded like fredi in a way. i realloy enjoyed her during take me or leave me

angel dumott schunard (justin johnston) he played a really good angel and he is brave to be wearing that costume his legs are really skinny too. i know that was a weird observation. his voice wasnt as good as wilson heredias but he was very talented and i liked his angel especially during today 4 u. i was tearing when he died.

mimi marquez (understudy dominique roy)ok not a great mimi and i would of liked to see karmine alers but i cant change that. her out tonight wasnt that great but she was good with cary and lots of emotion put in.

maureen johnson (kelly karbacz) not at all was she amazing her over the moon wasnt great either. she was okay in take me or leave me. even though im a fan of idina's there is no question who is better at least in my opinion. she didnt impress me much

frenchie - she was great and has an amazaing voice.

so overall it was a lifetime memory and was a great trip to nyc besides the weather it was the best day ever and i want to go back and see it

so inside my playbill was a silent auction thing which was cool it included 8 things to bid on starting from the lowest of a signed playbill starting at $50 but you can buy one for that much at the theater but it goes to bc/efa so thats good. also the most expensive thing was the be in rent walk on role starting at $2500 and you get to play someone during "life support" they also had signed script ook, and other things
other ones were a jacket and a robe and a cool thing was you can sit int he chair of love next to the RENT band and other stuff on that one. the one i want to do is the backstage tour and i wan to see the wall and that started at $200
IF ANYONE HAS A PICTURE OF THE WALL PLEASE POST IT!!!!!!!!!!!
if yo9u want more info on it PM me!

I thought I heard Kelly was a great Maureen...

Anyway, I saw D'Monroe and think he's better than, as you want to call it, OBC...

Nice review! Glad you enjoyed the show! One quick thing- try not to compare OBC's to the cast you've seen unless you have seen the OBC, in which case you can compare. I understand you're used to hearing the cast recording, but you can't really judge because cast recordings are so clean-cut. I understand though, I mentally thought about the OBC when I saw Rent, so we're all guilty of it! But still, always nice to find another Renthead!

Not to mention, I have listened to OBC's, then them perform and didn't like some people who I loved on the recording.

*sigh* how I'd LOVE to see the backstage of the Nederlander too.

Sounds like you had a blast!

I liked D'Monroe when I saw him..I thought he was VERY similar to Taye Diggs, and I thought Kelly was good. I thought she was a great singer in Over The Moon. I LOVED Justin, Cary, Matt, and I saw Phillip McAdoo as my Collins.

My first RENT experience, like 2 weeks ago, was the best theatrical experience I've ever had.

And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.

Cary's great. I can't remember if Adam has his tattoo when he played Roger (I think he did), but some have, some don't. It's defnitely one role where a visible tattoo is an okay thing.

I adored Kelly! Maybe just an off-day.

RENT OBC = me being madly in love.

Some of the best theatre-related experiences of my life (or lofe, as it were...) have had to do in one way or another with this show. I'm glad you liked it!

The wall? Are you talking about the wall of signatures?

"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell plus i proudly share the title of the shortest member over the age of 10 with wickedrentq!

Actually, it's the alleyway when you walk in the theatre, straight ahead. After you walk in, the entrance and ticket takers are on your right - the alley is behind the double doors straight ahead. Next time you're there, just open the doors and see if anyone says something.

I have pictures of it somewhere when I went back to sign the wall from a few years ago, but they're upstate, so I don't have them with me.

i saw it with most of those same ppl-except Dew Lachey played Mark (he was awful) and Jermey Jushnier as Roger (he was awesome) i agree about most of the other ppl-I wish i had been old enough to see it when the original cast was still there.
that silent auction thing sounds cool-i didnt get anything like it...

One more thing about the silent auction- I would KILL to be in Rent...I think a lot of people would. But I'm too poor to pay that money...it's not fair! And it would be nice to actually make the cast, but still! lol.

I've never done it, but they wouldn't kick you out for opening a door. Just play dumb.

so are most ppl that go to shows...

@ The Producers
- (to an usher) "Excuse me sir, what are these white pieces of paper?
- "Those tell you who will be subbing for a performer not here at this performance."
- "Oh, thank you...."

@ Hairspray
- "You are not allowed to open the door"
(person opens door)
"Excuse me! You cannot open that door. Do you think you're special? Follow everyone else to leave the theatre.
- "Well, I don't see why I have to..."

I don't know if the cast ever actually signed it, but it's so full that to really find any names you'd have to sit there for hours. I saw Jonathan's parents', but no one else really connected to the show.
