I read on playbill.com that catherine zeta jones is being considered to star as rose in the movie musical remake of gypsy. I think this will be awful. She doesn't seem to me like the right person to play rose. They should find some one who can sing and is a bit older.

At this point, anyone who considers doing a GYPSY re-make without LuPone is nuts.

LuPone doesn't sell box office tickets, and as much as I hate to say it, she is too old for the close proximity of a camera. Rose Havoc after all wasn't actually that old during the period where the show is set.

First of all, Zeta-Jones has a hell of a voice.
Second of all, she's the perfect age for the role. The passage of time the story takes (going from Rose's children being young toddlers to young women) is going to be alot more tricky to pull off on screen, and someone like Zeta-Jones would easily be able to portray both periods in Rose's life.
While I don't think the movie is ever going to be made, I think Zeta-Jones would be the perfect choice if it ever did happen. She has the right intensity, charm, sex appeal, and talent to pull it off. It's a performance I'd love to see someday in the future.
I think that after this City Center "revival" they should just give this musical a friggin' rest already.
Zeta-Jones wouldn't be the worst choice ever...not the best either.
WOW this is an old thread. lol
