Did anyone else catch Hairspray on the Early Show??? They did "Without Love".
Good performance, though they were cramped into a really narrow, deep space. For some reason, I found Corey Reynold's microphone distracting. I never noticed that it was attatched to a headband. hmm. Anyways, I still maintain, Kerry Butler is the under appreciated secret wepon in that show. Matthew was easy on the eyes and ears as always. Marissa was adorable and I enjoyed her vocals. She had some great little vocasl things that she did. As a side note, as tiny as Marissa is height wise, the girl playing Tracy on tour is actually shorter! Also, just to whine a bit -- I want one of those lunchboxes!! They also sent them to Tony Voters. Singing backup they had Shayna, Judine, and Kamilah in their 'Dynamites' getups and for the last part of the song, they also had peter matthew Smith (one of like to hetero boys in the Hiarpsray chorus!) and Eric Dysart (or was it Eric Anthony?? Didn't get a good enough look).
They also did a short interview.
All in all a pleasing appearance.

I caught the end of it (I didn't even know they were going to be on). I was flipping through channels, waiting for Live! With Regis and Kelly to come on at 9am, and I saw the cast of Hairspray. They seemed to not only be crammed, but to be rushing through it a little bit. Still, I enjoyed what I saw of it.
Frog and Toad will be on tomorrow, and the 3 strippers from Gypsy are scheduled for Saturday (at least that's what I read on another MB). Sunday there is a special profile piece that Bernadette Peters taped.

the tempo was rushed a bit, but they Do have a time constraint so it is understandable.
Seeing this Hairspray segment definitely puts one in mind of wanting to see this show. After the Tonys this weekend the Hairspray demand will only increase.

For those who missed it. You can watch the video at the CBS Early Show website. They also have an article that includes some excerpts from the interview. The video, however, includes thentire interview before the number.

I love that song! They all sing so well, particularly Kerry and Matthew. I can't wait to see the show! I also cant wait to see their tony performance. Unlike others, I think that "You Can't Stop the Beat" is perfect, and I never get tired of seeing it on TV.

ya i think i knew that, but i dont think she gets to show off her voice as much as in hairsrpay...does she??

yeah, she does....a lot more. In Hairspray she doesn't have any numbers of her own. Her voice is ALL OVER the Bat Boy album. I LOVE it!
I cant watch it because I dont have real player- it prevents me from seeing it.

well, ok, but does she get use the same insane vocal range she gets to use in hairspray?? cuz i thought i heard it and wasn't as impressed, but then again i had nothing to compare to...

Bat Boy is a very vocally demanding show and she does get to show off more range than in Hairspray.
I have adoraded Kerry since seeing her as Belle in Beauty and the Beast.

If you go to her website, you can hear a bunch of audio clips with her singing all ranges and styles. There's also video clips on the main site and in the "just for fans" section - including the song she sang to audition for the role of Penny...

That's what happens when you get older! Sorry Craig. Craig, Craig, Craig. I'll go write it up on the blackboard 30 or 40 times.
