Warning: STAY AWAY FROM WEST SIDE STORY!! My high school did it and some girls didn't make the cut because it is a male dominated show! They're not kidding about the drama!

Yeah, we did just do this: it was musical-specific. Are you looking for just plays though?

I am sorry. I meant non musicals. And this my first time on this website, sorry, if this has been repeated over and over.

Don't worry. Welcome!!! The search feature can be really helpful. Also sometimes, people get angry if you don't use it and we've just talked about it. So give it a try.
Um...my HS did "Song of Survival," which is all-female and really good (we also did Steel Magnolias...surprise, surprise.)
Look at:
- The Learned Ladies
- The Odd Couple (Female Version)
- The Crucible
Check out the collection "Plays for Actresses" edited by Eric Lane and Nina Shengold that are plays with ALL girls...
More girls than boys in the HS drama department? Shocking. You'd think somewhere the demand would trickle down to the writers. "Smile" is a musical that works. As for plays, I'm guessing there might be a straight play version of A Little Princess or Jane Eyre or Anne of Green Gables?

Actually, There is a play called "A piece of my heart". It is awesome. It is about the women of vietnam. Girlfriends, nurses, etc. It has a lot of room for creativity and large roles for around 6 women. However, you can turn it into a 20 person cast but adding in people for striking scenes, and so on, parties. Also, yikes, what is the name, The lonestar women, something like that. it is all women.

During high school, I'd always said that I wanted to write shows that were female-heavy so that the high schools could do them. But then I'm a male, so writing female-heavy shows becomes difficult because I feel like I'll misrepresent.
Yeah, you'd think it would trickle down to the writers, but somehow it hasn't. I think it's just hard being that there are still more male composers/lyricists/bookriters than female.
Then you have the fact that the majority of broadway musicals are based on source material of some other sort, and most other source material seems to be male-heavy.

Try The Women. It has a large cast too.
- Beautiful Bodies
- Crimes of the Heart
- Steel Magnolias
- My Mother Said I Never Should

VANITIES by Jack Heifner
Swoosie Kurtz was in it originally. All girls/women.
"Talking with…" by Jane Martin
Also all women. A series of great, often very funny monologues.
Also, I went to an all girls school, and we actually did a lot of shows where we re-cast roles as female. Have you thought of doing that? There's a really interesting play, "The Visit," (by Friedrich Dürrenmatt) where you can do that with most of the suporting cast. We did, at least.
Hope that helps a little!
the classic comedy STAGE DOOR. it has TONS of female roles.
i also saw the classic 12 ANGRY MEN done with all women.

During the past spring I was in my highschool play of 12 Angry JURORS rather than MEN... we have more girls than guys in the performing arts departments and people who audition and everything so we just had maybe 5 guys in the show and the rest girls. It worked out reallyyyy well. but that's not a comedy.
