I think most people thinking how great and transcendant their high school musicals are will be in for a good laugh ten years later when they watch the video again.
I was so impressed by a high school production of Les Mis, I went back and saw it three more times. It was just as good as on Broadway, with the lighting and special effects, as well as fantastic talent, all for just 10 bucks a ticket.
Yeah, I've only ever seen one high school production that I would ever pay to attend, and that was a production of Les Mis. It was just very well done, with great singers and actors and enough talent to make sure that no one was stretching or thin.
I was also in the mezz, so the age factor wasn't noticeable.

"Go see any of the productions at LaGuardia HS, the performing arts/arts high school located behind Lincoln Center on Amsterdam. Their productions are always of the highest quality."
I graduated LaG last year, and was in Ragtime, Pirates of Penzance, and Merry Widow. Our productions were amazing in every way, and they continue to be since I graduated (I just saw Mikado which was awesome).
"And didnt LaGuardia HS just do RaGTIME like last year? Because Molly Ranson who is in Osage County has that in her bio as playing Mother."
Yes we did! I was JP Morgan and she was one of the alternating Mothers. She is amazing!

Yes, not only do they have actors with fabulous voices, but dancers and an orchestra that revivals any on Broadway.
Great school!
My school's done some pretty great stuff. We've been really lucky to have professional directors come and direct our shows. My favorites from this past year were:
Kindertransport (student directed. And it was phenomonal.)
Electra
Footloose (not the greatest of the year, but a good production nonetheless.
Peter Pan (okay I've got to admit I'm a bit biased since I played Michael, but it was an amazing production. We got written up about it.)
And other great productions we've previously done Metamorphoses (with a pool onstage), The Heidi Chronicles (student directed. My favorite show of the 2006-2007 year), Urinetown, and The Laramie Project. We had award winning director from the Boston area, Nancy Curran Willis, direct Peter Pan, Metamorphoses, Urinetown, and Laramie. Auditions for Miracle Worker are next week, and she's directing that. It's going to be awesome.
The other high school in our town does really good musicals. I loved their production of Chicago. There's also a summer program here that puts on phenomenal productions. I've seen them do Ragtime, Aida, Children of Eden, and Parade and all four were amazing. This summer they're doing Jekyll and Hyde as the mainstage production, and then three other smaller shows (Violet, Spitfire Grill, and A Few Good Men). I'm psyched to see them.
I haven't bee back to my high school since I graduated 5 years ago, but they always used to put on great musicals every spring. I think my favorites have to have been Guys and Dolls and Once Upon a Mattress.
I once watched a video of Midsummer Night's Dream by the High School of Performing Arts with Marisa Tomei as Hermia. She was very funny.

My high school did PASSION this year. I was in it! It was a 40 minute cutting/one-act of it though. High school premiere! It was extremely well received.
my high school production of Seussical was very good. It kind of depends on the year.
