the best high school production of a show that I have seen was Footloose, and I could see it working in a lot of other high schools too. what are your thoughts on HS productions of shows?!

Four years ago my High School did a production of Chicago that was AMAZINGGG! Then this year we did a production of Beauty and the Beast that was equally amazing. Producers from the licensing companies said that they were good enough to be on Broadway, and sure enough the stars are now in really good theatre schools. It's one of the only good things about my school...

I've done more than my share of directing high school plays and musicals. Some turned out great, others were crap.

The great ones were NOISES OFF, RUMOURS, LOST IN YONKERS, LEND ME A TENOR, SEE HOW THEY RUN, PETER PAN, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN

The crap were: THE MIRACLE WORKER, NO, NO NANETTE, THE SOUND OF MUCOUS and OUR TOWN (I've directed three productions of the play. This was the worst)

My high school production of West Side Story in 1977 was pretty damned good. Our Maria was a gal named Dawn Upshaw.

I was never in a good high school production. But I saw a fantastic production of Grease, which is a show that I normally loathe.

A High School by the name of California High School in Whittier, use to do some amazing productions. People from L.A and critics would come out and see them. People from Las Vegas, Texas and Northern Ca would come out and see the productions (because they heard that this school did good work). Once the shows were announce, within two weeks to a month, the shows' two week runs would be sold out. Also, they did not have a theater at their school so they would rent the big theater downtown and make it a big event. This school also had very little money and was still be able to put on some major productions that looked like Broadway caliber productions. When they did OLIVER the used the original Broadway Set, when the did THE MUSIC MAN, they used the National Touring set, it was very well done for high school in my mind (I was not seeing a "high school show" I was seeing a SHOW) That was a while ago though, the director retired and the new instructor has changed things around, to some people; not for the better.

Our high school production of THoroughly Modern Millie was nominated for a Rising Star award from Papermill. I think it works very well as a high school show because it is very fun and "fluff"-filled. haha

It seemed everyone really enjoyed Singin' in the Rain this year, especially after Babes in Arms sucked so much.

Oklahoma! was really well liked as well.

I was just in my high school production of You're A Good Man Charlie Brown. It seemed as if it was very well recieved. I got a lot of compliments after the production ended. So I guess that means everyone liked it.

before i entered my high school, my brother was there and they did EVITA winning the Papermill Rising Star award for best musical and the girl who played Eva Person in the show won best actress ...in a tie breaker with Ms Laura Benanti who won Best actress as well for Sarah Brown in Guys & Dolls :) They all got to perform at the papermill. I was so excited for my brother. Then after their class left and we all entered lol shows went down hill. Not saying we're talentless but the director definately lost her spunk.

I cover some high school productions locally. I am often impressed with the inventive ways the students solve the technical demands of the shows.

I too just saw a student production of FOOTLOOSE that was very very good.

That said there are some shows I do NOT want to see High Schoolers tackle. Most Sondheim shows come under this heading...a student production of PASSION...I shudder to think what would happen in Act One Scene One!

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

My high school just did Once On This Island, and it was really really great. It's a good show for high school anyway.

I was actually a judge for Papermill's rising star awards for a couple of years. I saw two brilliant production while doing it, Glen Ridge High School's Sweeney Todd, and Hoboken High School's Once on this Island, which ended up winning best production. And I know I mentioned this on another thread somewhere, but I also got to see, and was shocked when she didn't win Best Actress (I really campaigned for her), Anne Hathaway in her HS's production of Once Upon a Mattress.

Go see any of the productions at LaGuardia HS, the performing arts/arts high school located behind Lincoln Center on Amsterdam. Their productions are always of the highest quality.
