It's Holler If Ya Hear Me. If this comes out I will buy it immediately. I've been hoping for a cast recording ever since it opened. I don't know whether it was recorded or not, but I admit I don't understand why a cast recording would be recorded and then not put out.
You can hear three tracks here if you haven't yet:

They did record a bunch of the songs - I think the whole album.

Posted: 3/5/15 at 12:48pmThe reason a show is recorded but not released is simple. The show closed so the interest in the album would be greatly reduced. Why throw good money after bad promoting an album very few people would buy since the show was a flop?

It was recorded.
I may still see the light of day, but honestly I wouldn't hold my breath.
As you guys know many times flops are recorded and released as advertising. It's a worthwhile benefit for the producers to keep their show out there and gain fans.
I don't see Holla having much life in regional theaters, so paying to produce what is essentially a promotional tool doesn't make a lot of sense.

As has been shown many times over, a cast recording can take a show that was once a flop and elevate it to cult or beloved status. I don't think there would have ever been a The Last Five Years movie or the off-Broadway revival were it not for that original cast album.
Also, I think there is something compelling about having a recording for historical purposes if nothing else.

Unfortunately, it costs a ton of money to get one out. If someone with deep pockets wants to do it more power to them. It simply comes down to dollars & cents especially if the show will have no life after Broadway.
If a show is still running, a cast album might help sales. To do it after the show has closed does not make sense economically.

Thanks for explaining that it costs a lot to put one out. I didn't know it cost so much if it's already recorded. Meh.
I still hope they decide to do it at some point, because I absolutely love the three tracks they posted and the clips I've seen. I'd be first on line to buy it. (Well, probably first online to buy it.)

If the album has already been recorded, what would it cost them to put it on itunes? Digital distribution eliminates all manufacturing costs.

tazber, do you have inside knowledge that they actually recorded it?
I was under the impression that the recording sessions in the linked videos were for demos, not the actual album, and that the actual album never came to pass.

It believe it would reduce but not totally eliminate costs.
I also believe there would still be a royalty question. Bottom line is for a show that had limited public interest before it opened & less after it closed, why would they even bother? It simply is not worth the effort.

neon, I do not have inside knowledge. I should have made that more clear and provided the link where I got that from.
I saw it on talkinbroadway. They have it listed as recorded but awaiting a release date.
Scroll all the way to the bottom of the link and you'll see it's listed.

It was NEVER recorded. I was with the production.
There were no funds to make it.
#17holler if you hear me
Posted: 3/5/15 at 10:16pmOnly the demo tracks were recorded. There was not enough funding for the full album.
