I personally would consider him a great musical theatre performer, not a great singer. just like john lithgow

Joel Grey is a good singer. Not a great singer. But certainly a good singer.

It's called ACTING. Musical theater performers need to ACT a song. Sometimes that means not sounding "pretty." CABARET is not a Joel Grey concert. He's playing a character - and brilliantly.

To me, Joel Grey is the essence of Broadway. Does he have a great voice. Depends on how you characterize voice: no it's not Ponselle, Lehman, Caruso, Farrell, etc. But taken as an instrument that conveys the luminosity, the spirit and the happiness that one associates with old time Broadway in its glory days, it is well-neigh perfect. He shares a lot with some golden others, many of whom are now forgotten, but in their day their voices sent wavess on stage, on radio and in the primitive recording era: Mary Hay, Louise Groody, Helen Ford, Charles King, Jack Whiting, William Gaxton, Audrey Christie, Mitzi Green, Wynn Murray, Ray Bolger, the Astaires, Gertrude Niesen, Jean Casto and a cast of many others.

Joel Grey falls along the lines with Gwen Verdon, Ann Reinking, Carol Channing, and many more.

Joel Grey is brilliant. And on the OBC of Cabaret he is playing a character. Something many current B'way performers have never learned to do. The way he is singing -- he is doing a character voice, which has now become known as the voice of that character. Before the revival, everyone who did the part copied that sound. Because it was the character's voice. And a brilliant choice. The revival went in a completely new direction on purpose, because no one was able to recreate the character, everyone just did an impersonation of Joel Grey. It is the same scenerio as Ellen Green in Little Shop. Everyone does an impersonation of her.
To say that Joel Grey isn't a good singer because of how he sounds on the OBC is just stupidity. He is playing a character and doing a character voice. How is that not obvious to everyone on the planet?

Alright. Let's not judge Joel Grey's singing voice on his performance in Cabaret. It should be very obvious that it's a character voice he sings with on the OBC and in the movie.
About a year ago I rented from the library a video made for the BBC of 'Yeomen of the Guard' by Gilbert and Sullivan. Joel Grey plays Jack Point, the clown, and his singing was pretty damn weak. Not only was he out of his league with the otherwise operatic cast of the show, but he sounded like he had difficulty just getting through his songs. I really doubt this was a character choice.
Joel Grey is a great performer. But from any technical musical standpoint, he is a mediocre singer.
