it was Elphaba4 these are her/his favorite singers They're all Broadway actors and actresses:
1. Idina Menzel
2. Adam Pascal
3. Sherie Rene Scott
4. Joel Grey
5. Norbert Leo Butz
6. Taye Diggs
7. Linda Eder
8. Terrance Mann
9. Kristin Chenoweth
10. Hugh Panero
personally, I may get tarred and feathered but I heard the revival cast recording of CABARET prior to the original so when I finally did listen to the OBC when Joel sang his first line I nearly threw up. I couldn't believe what he was doing. like he wasn't even trying or he was trying to sound annoying... I dunno, just annoys me to all hell compared to Alan or Adam's Emcee. We've had a few posts now in various threads that have all boiled down to the fact that hiting the notes or having a great sounding voice is not always the most important thing on Broadway. I can't say I'd like to listen to an album of Joel Grey Sings Broadway's Greatest Love Songs, but I bet he would have an interesting interpretation of each one. Every time I've seen him perform I've been impressed by what he's brought to the part, not necessarily the beauty of his voice.
"like he wasn't even trying or he was trying to sound annoying"
He modeled the character after a really awful Vaudeville performer he had seen as a kid that scared the crap out of him..
So I guess you could say he was trying to be annoying.
But Grey owns that role as much as Kiley owns Don Quixote or Holiday owns Effie.
As good as Alan was, it was such a different interpretation and cannot even be compared.
Nothing can creep me out quite like the opening shot of Grey in the film of Cabaret. Sends shivers down my spine every time.
He didn't win the Tony and the Oscar for nothing.

Joel Grey's performance in GEORGE M! was one of the greatest things I ever saw. Including his singing.

I thought he was brilliant in Cabaret- OBC recording and movie versions. Is the timbre of his voice beautiful? No. But it fits the part, and it's wonderfully expressive and musical. So while I wouldn't call him one of my favorite singers, I'm not going to look strangely at those who do.
Well he's not fantastic...but he's good, and he's so classic! Song and dance man sums it up.

Just because he won a Tony and an Oscar doesn't mean everyone has to like him.

Nope. But the fact that one doesn't like him doesn't give one the ability to say that no one else can possibly consider him to be a good singer.
His voice was so prue and clean in Cabaret OBC....definately a good tone quality....he is(or was) a good singer.

I agree with Priest! Honestly, he is a brilliant performer, and while the quality of his voice may not be pleasant to everyone's ears, it's music to mine!
Listen to JOEL GREY-LIVE! (his nightclub act) or GOODTIME CHARLEY. His voice may be brash in an Anthony Newley sort of way (interestingly Grey replaced Newley in STOP THE WORLD-I WANT TO GET OFF and THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT, THE SMELL OF THE CROWD), but he hits every note dead center, he has superb diction and breath control and there is no sliding or embroidering the notes. Also, as previously noted, Grey is a PERFORMER whose appeal increases when seen live. But frankly I would rather hear Joel Grey than some of the showboating that passes for singing these days on American Idol.
It is a free country. You can alledgedly say what you want - yeah right
He is an all around performer. Some have great voices & no idea what to do with them . He has an OK voice but makes the most of it

Thank you. Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly didn't have great voices either.

I don't think a singer should be measured by the caliber of thier voice. I like the way that Joel Grey delivers a song..the man has energy! I think he father was a cantor.
His dad was Mickey Katz, a famous Borscht belt comedian.
I agree, he is a PERFORMER and an all rounder. While his voice may not be the most melodious around he can make up for any shortcomings by his other performance skills.
Joel Grey is a very good singer, i'd like to see you sing the songs he sings an do it just as well!!
