If we were to cast West Side Story right now, who would play Maria, Tony, Anita, Bernardo, and Maria's two(three?) friends?

Maria - Mandy Gonzalez, Caren Emmanuel, or even Idena Mespinoza
Anita - Whichever girl from above isn't Maria...
Bernardo - Mannuel Herrera

I only know so many hispanic/hispanic looking actors so I'm not the best one to do this...

I'd cast very young, unknown performers (ages 18-23). I'm intrigued by the idea of casting WEST SIDE STORY with actors young enough to be mistaken for teenagers.

I too think they should cast young people as Maria and Tony. Bernardo and Anita can be a little older, say in there mid 20's to early 30's.

Bernardo and Anita are NOT supposed to be that much older. The Jets and Sharks are gangs of JUVENILE DELINQUENTS. They are all supposed to be under 21. You have been brainwahsed by the movie, in which Rita Moreno and George Chakiris look positively middle-aged. Realistically, Anita is 18 or 19, Maria is 16 at most. Tony Riff and Bernardo shold be no older than 19. These guys are just out of high school. They still live at home with their parents. They are not old enough to drink - that's why they hang out in a damn drugstore instead of a bar! Baby John should be about 12 years old - unless he's retarded!
