re: irritating voices

Redhot - agree with your post. Might I add Brent Barrett to that list of lovely voices with nothing behind them?

re: irritating voices

Mandy Patinkin
Adam Pascal
Vanessa Williams (the way she drops at the end of every phrase)
Liliane Montevecchi
Karen Akers
Glenn Close
Jerry Hadley
Glynis Johns

I would agree with Betty Buckley if I had only heard the CDs, but when you see her live, you understand what all the fuss is about. The woman is utterly amazing. Same thing with Christine Andreas. I didn't care for hearing her voice on CD, but I loved her when I saw Scarlet Pimpernel.

Idina was fantastic in Rent. Her voice was great then as it is now. Anyone who thinks she sounds like she's screaming has obviously never heard someone scream before. I would love to know where this "screaming" occurs because I have never heard her do it live or on any CD.

re: irritating voices

Rathnait - its funny you should say that - joeyjoe was playing Brent Barrett's Kander and Ebb CD this weekend and I kept thinking - nice enough voice, but it just does nothing for me - though, of all the songs on the CD, I did think he sounded best suited for Billy Flynn on the recording.

Last summer he and KZ did a concert in East Hampton, and I didn't understand how he could be onstage with her and be...so...BOOOORING. Like, didn't he notice what she was doing? She was awesome, and he just put me to sleep.

"Ooh, I can't believe I forgot Mastrantonio on Man of La Mancha! Thanks, ShbrtAlley. Her performance of "It's All the Same" is incredibly grating. I'm getting a headache just thinking about it."

But what about The reprise of "Dulcinea"? MEM was exquisite....

The only one that drives me to drink is Mandy Patinkins voice....That man can melt lead in 10 inches of ice! EWWWWWW

re: irritating voices

To be fair, her rendition of "Aldonza" wasn't bad. In fact, I rather liked it. But her "It's All the Same" is so godawful I can't help but be affected for the rest of the CD.

re: irritating voices

Nothing was more irritating than Mandy Patinkin in The Wild Party...not just singing, but everything about him was irritating !!!

re: irritating voices

as I said before - you should hear Angela Decicco do Aldonza - not only is she an amazing actress - but her mix on all the top stuff is amazing. I haven't heard from her in a few years - but the last thing I remember her doing was swinging all the females in the ensemble of Les Miz on Broadway. Gosh I miss that girl!

re: irritating voices

I was lucky (NOT) to sit next to Mandy Patinkin the first time I saw Urinetown Off-Broadway...he laughed so uncontrollably that it ruined the show for me. I'm glad I gave it a second chance when it got to Broadway. That would be a good thread...someone in the audience who ruined a show for you.

re: irritating voices

Josie deGuzman in "Guys and Dolls". Almost ruins listening to the OCR for me. Her strained rendition of "If I Were a Bell" makes me want to lay down and die.

re: irritating voices

I have to agree with that one. I hate the way she delivers the lines too. She sounds like she's in a high school production. I don't like Faith Prince either.

re: irritating voices

You're right, it DOES sound very high school. Yikes! And agre again about Faith Prince - nnnaaaasal. (This has been another Jerry Zaks moment.)

re: irritating voices

thanks to whomever said frances ruffelle. she totally ruins eponine for me. i bought the TAC so i wouldn't have to put up with her whiney interpretation. same goes with kate reinders in Gypsy. i think she is irritating primarily because the character of June calls for it, but it is still enough to make me skip all of her songs on the CD.

omg i hate frances ruffelle's voice! eponine is my fav. character, but whenever i'm listening to OBC i'm just like, why her?! anyone else but her!

re: irritating voices

The character of Dainty June as sung by Tracy Venner in the Tyne Daly production was nowhere near as annoying, and yet somehow still got the point across. You don't have to be as completely horrifyingly turn-offish annoying as Kate Reinders to play June. Every time she squealed my ears bled.

re: irritating voices

ok, yeah her squeals are pretty annoying, but her normal singing voice isn't that bad.

re: irritating voices

I guess I am in the minority of really loving Sarah Brightman and Frances Rufelle - to me, she is the definative Eponine! I was lucky to catch her do it in London a few years back, with Mario Frangoulis as Marius.
