I actually love Michael Ball as Marius! And I love Sherie Rene Scott in Aida but she kind of gets on my nerves in L5Y. I don't know if it's her character or her...but i usually just listen to Norbert's songs!
Also, when the original Mereb in Aida sings "yeeeeeeeew" in "How I Know You", i want to cry.
Sherie Rene Scott in L5Y always goes FLAT in her upper register. But besides that, great show.

Wow Angela DiCicco. I did two community theatre productions with her (in 198 when she was still in college. She was really awesome. We all expected her to be a big broadway star.

spider, I think it was you who mentioned the woman who plays the Jewish mother in Caroline, or Change. Her voice made me cringe. Every time. The end.
Oh, and you all know that I love love LOVE Mr. Esparza, but does anyone else think that the way he sings/says "you" (or any word that sounds kind of like it) is a little weird?
I enjoy Michael Ball. I'll take him over Ricky Martin. And I second Marylouise Burke. She makes the new cast of "Into The Woods" unbearable. And another one for my list: Gary Morris, the Complete Symphonic Valjean. I.HATE.HIM. He's nothing more than a Colm Wilkinson knockoff.

This reminds me, one time I saw a review of Wicked where the person was genuinely asking whether Norbert Butz spoke English as a second language because they thought he pronounced words really weird...that made me laugh lol.
hmmmm... well I think that English is Raul's second language, but what I'm talking about doesn't really sound like anything that would come from having an accent. And even though Spanish was his first language, he doesn't have an accent at all.
Norbert Leo Butz does pronounce some of his words strangely.
especially the "r" is words. Like in L5Y
"I'm breaking my mother's Hearrrrrrrrrrrt"

Norby just has a bit of an accent. Maybe he was trying to be southern.
Raul is just silly when he says words. Loves to mess with them.

I really like Norbert, It is just kinda annoying when he stresses his "r's"

Finally someone else agrees that Idina Menzel's voice is one of the worst voices ever. She doesn't know how to belt properly and it sounds awful - it's a very unfocused sound that is not placed properly. Also extremely annoying: Kristin Chenowith's belt and speaking voice (not head voice), Kerry Butler is annoying and irritating all around. It amazes me how a mediocre talent like Kerry Butler gets employment.
RiffDiva...totally agree

Idina's voice very much gets on my nerves on live recordings. The only way she can sound decent is if they stick her in a recording studio and let her re-do it tons of times.
I can't with Ethel Merman...
lol
I really hate Ethel Merman's voice!!!!!
her version of gipsy.... brrrrrrrrrrr
thanks god for Bernadette Peters

It's great to find other people who agree that most b'way performers that people worship on this site are nothing short of mediocre talents. I totally agree with you guys....People need to learn that this is a business, it's not about hiring genuine talent as much as it's about business.
I feel ya on Bernadette's GYPSY performance...so bad.
Funny story: I was in Gypsy as a child and when the Bernadette version recording came out on CD, I played it for my director, who hadn't heard it yet. After we finished listening to Some People, he looks up from his computer and says "Wow, I didnt know they were playing Rose as a drunk." LOL

Granted, not everyone has to be a fan of Ms. Menzel. However, she is far from belting or singing improperly. If she were she would absolutely not be able to give a vocally adept and capable performance. Moreover, her voice would be in shambles if she weren't singing correctly. You don't have to love her, but you do have to concede to the fact that 9 times out of 10 she delivers and does not hurt herself.

all of the live recordings I've heard of her were pretty iffy. She was a little off when I saw her in Wicked. I don't like her voice...she's not consistant

You are right...9 out of 10 times she delivers - inconsistantly. Anyone who has studied voice with excellent teachers will agree that Ms. Menzel's technique, placements, tone and overall qualities are off the mark.
Plenty of people sing with bad technique and their voices aren't in shambles. So that's not an indicator that she's singing correctly.

Agreed. Menzel does not have good, solid technique and as a result she sings incorrectly. That has nothing to do with her voice being in a "shambles", as plenty of people sing incorrectly and their voices are not in a "shambles". Menzel is mediocrity at its best.
I cannot stand listening to Tyne Daily or Ethel Merman for long periods of time. Sorry to those who love Ms. Merman but I simply cannot stand her. Sherie Rene Scott seems to have some problems when she sings higher as well, but for the most part I enjoy her.
