first..please read this before jumping to a response..i take things like this very seriously......i have just learned that particular theatre in this city would not allow me to assistant direct a show because i am a man. I personally find this to be in the poorest of taste..I believe theatres should never have "profiling" for positions..but pick the best candidate. Please understand I am not opposed to any woman ever having any job, but to discriminate against me because I am a man..is outright wrong. I dont want to cause trouble...but i believe this theatre is doing a disservice to the theatre world and to those of us who are looking to develop our careers. If we dont stop this kind of bias. where does it end.

You've answered your own question.
is this a women only theatre? There also might be some kind of psychological problem that the director has that would make them afraid to work with you. Unlikely... but possible! Updated On: 3/7/05 at 06:29 PM
i know they promote womens issues, but what does that have to do with working with men. How would women feel if men said no women stage managers..that wouldnt go over very well..I am very dissappointed others have not responded to this thread. very scary that no one seems to care about the environment they work in
It's very Ellen Jamesian, isn't it? Sounds like an elitist environment you're well out of. There's nothing one can do when such attitudes are firmly entrenched. Time will make them obsolete.
Maybe Dorothy Michaels should apply .....
There has GOT to be some legal issues with that. If it were the other way around, it would certainly not be allowed to slide.

It sounds unfair, but before giving them a hard time, you might want to find out if maybe they are a non-profit applying for grants and there's something in their charter documents about certain positions being created for women. Or something of that sort...
If there isn't a good reason, then it does sound like discrimination. Have you asked them specifically WHY a man wouldn't be allowed to assistant direct? (Of course, if you go to the media complaining about them, then you will likely not be allowed to assistant direct simply because people tend not to hire someone who has attacked their company!)
