John Robert Powers is a SCAM. DON'T DO IT!

John Casablanca is a true scam, but John Robert Powers is a semi-scam. I was a student there when I was in the 9th grade.

You basically go and just do stuff. No learning. You don't get taught anything. The teachers just show up and do exercises and scenes that have no goal. It's just to fill time. And it's EXPENSIVE!!

I would say if the 11-year old is serious about wanting to pursue acting, get a private acting coach or go to a TRULY distinguished school. Participate in community theatre. Audition for an agent and see what advice they offer.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

My now 12 year old is taking acting lessons at TVI Actors Studio in Chicago. (They have other outlets in LA and NY) The classes seem focused on technique and not just exercises. They do scenes - the do improv - they are coached on audition protocol. They have "counselors" who take an interest in your career and provide advice and assistance in locating agents and photographers. It's included in "membership" but you don't have to be a "member" to take classes - just a different fee schedule, much like YMCA. I'm not unhappy with the product - but our issue has more to do with traveling 100 miles and conflicts with community theatre so we haven't been able to take full advantage.

JRP is a scam. Absolutely. I was suckered into it and it was the most useless crap I've ever been involved with.

My sister has been going to John Robert Powers in Atlanta for modelling and acting, and has gotten quite a few modelling jobs and a few acting bits as well
So I wouldn't call it a scam, at least in her case
