When I was on the stairmaster this morning, doing my daily penance for my sins, I was listening to the Sondheim "Scrabble album" and trying not to laugh too loudly at songs like "Me and My Town" and "I'm Not Getting Married Today." Then at some point I started wondering why it is that the wordplay and jokes in these songs, which I've known by heart for years now, still almost invariably make me laugh out loud. There's no surprise, no novelty, I know which particular lyrics are headed my way at any given moment -- but I laugh anyway!
Any theories on this? Also, how about examples of lyrics or dialogue that always make you laugh no matter how many times you hear them?
Well, from a movie, obviously, MOMMIE DEAREST.
I have a club remix song that was put together by someone, using MOMMIE DEAREST quotes.
Although I have listened to it hundreds of times, there's one part that always makes me burst out laughing. There's a long break of no dialogue, and it's just music - then all of the sudden, we hear Faye, calmy saying "I am not one of your..." and then she does a classic bi-polar 360 and screams at the top of her lungs "FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNSSSSSSSSS."
It KILLS me.
My dear munk...I know EXACTLY what you mean. There's something about beating your child with a hanger that never looses its luster!
I never told you this, but obviously, the most appropriate arena for this discussion is an online message board.
I've always meant to tell you this, but always forgot. I was standing on line at Duane Reade with my friend Casey and we were talking about how funny that movie is, quoting different lines, and talking about how funny it is when she beats her daughter (or, the pillow) with the hanger.
This woman in front of us turned around and was like "That is not funny! IT's very serious! My friend's mother used to do that to her! It's incredibly sad. Not funny at all."
She was really pissed, then stormed out of the store. People on line around us who had heard our conversation all started laughing. IT was priceless. MOMMIE DEAREST is such a wonderful piece of art. Look at all the people who's lives it has touched. Now, Brody, bring me the axe.
Actually, Tirso, it is Christina who says that line.
Thank Goodness
Like some terrible green blizzard, throughout the land she flies! Defaming our poor wizard with her calumnies and lies!
ASAYM
It's "up" that I fell!
What does that mean anyway.
Now as you know I LOVE the show, but I'm very much able to realize it has quite a few bad factors.
WickedGeek28- or the even better:
"There are bridges you cross you didn't know you crossed,
until you've crossed"
I always laugh at the absurdity.

I want you to know, that for the longest time I thought they were saying "green LIZARD," and it made me laugh all that much harder. When I figured out what they were actually saying, it wasn't that funny.

Honestly? Every time I listen to "Uh Oh!" on The Color Purple soundtrack, there's one part that I just bust out laughing every time, especially since I just finished reading the novel and know how Sofia acts. Anyways, it's the part where Sofia's fine with Squeak saying all the crap about her, then Squeak slaps her... and the music just starts, and everyone's like "Hoo, damn!" I haven't seen the show, but I can just picture Sofia saying "Aw, hell, no!" and going all out crazy on Squeak. It's music... and it cracks me up.

Almost every line in A Little Priest from Sweeney Todd
That blizzard/lizard used to exist in my mind as "wizard." haha.
