It's not bad -- just kind of a yawn of a review:

that's a very vague review. seems like the writer was unable to commit to an opinion. it is newsday...

Winer's actually one of the better critics out there. She was clearly lukewarm about the show -- she didn't hate it, but nothing about it got her excited and the review reflects that. I'd expect there'll be other critics with a similar ho-hum reaction.

wow that's sad this was one of the few shows I was truly looking forward to...has anything opened to good reviews recently? (ok to be fair not much has opened that deemed good reviews)

One middling review and now you're no longer looking forward to seeing La Cage?
As far as shows that have gotten mostly good reviews, what do you call Gem of the Ocean, Doubt, Democracy, 700 Sundays, Dame Edna...

Democracy, Gem of the Ocean, Doubt, Dame Edna, A Number, 700 Sundays, Twelve Angry Men, Guantanamo, Nine Parts of Desire, and The Hasty Heart all received mostly positive reviews, if not raves.

ok let me refraise what musical has recently gotten good reviews...yes there are tons of plays that have.
no i am still looking forward to la cage...and i will still see it. But I usually tend to agree with newsday's reviews (but not always so I am still going to see it with an open mind).

La Cage was good, not great. I saw it last week. The only thing that was truly spectacular was the Cagelles (they work their asses off!)and yes, Daniel Davis was excellent- Its too bad that Song on the Sand is such a boring song. Gary Beach, I felt, was weak. He did not look like he was comforable in heels- his walking/dancing (if you can call it that)was pretty shaky. I just didn't feel he was quite right for the role. I thought Gavin Creel was too fey for the role of Jean Michel and that awful ponytail- chop it off!
I will be curious to see the rest of the reviews. I did see the original cast when my brother and I played hooky from junior high to come to New York to see a play!!! I fondly remember it so maybe my I am being a bit critical, but I just felt it was good rather than amazing.

Okay...so when some of our own posters gave similar reviews they were ridiculed for not having any taste..but now it seems they're not the only ones.

mendelbaum's is up....he loves beach and davis but think the production doesnt live up to the original.

I'm a Long Islander and have been reading Linda Winer's reviews in NEWSDAY for years now. Obviously, this gal doesn't like revivals of chestnuts. She was lukewarm anout almost every one in the past 10 years. However, when she's reviewing new and inventive productions, she's extremely perceptive.
Take her LA CAGE review with a grain of salt.

Seems to me, the critic didn't like the show walking into the theatre.

Could the fault lie behind the man at the helm (Jerry Zaks)? Don't get me wrong, I like some of the things he has worked on, but it seems like his last 2 project were mis-directed.
I plan on seeing it soon, and will give my review at that time.
