Posted: 3/12/07 at 10:21pmI agree about those orchestrations. I was expecting the familiar delicate opening to "We Are What We Are" and instead it was like banjos or something that just sounded odd. The show itself felt like some big cake with too much icing and not enough filling. Make that icing overblown with glitter and doilies.

Blame it all on Gavin refusing to get a haircut.
Just kidding...

Posted: 3/12/07 at 10:56pmHaha, I forgot about that pony tail. Ewwww. But it could have been worse. Before I saw it, one of the reviews I read described it as a "mullet," and I was truly scared. I wish I could remember what publication that was...

Posted: 3/13/07 at 7:18amVile, vile sets and costumes. The original used a pastel palette, the revival relied heavily on hues of red, beige and royal blue. Vile.

I think your all being a little OTT
Sure the Revival had problems and was not as good as the original(what revivals are) but the choreography was very good(im a pro dancer and some of the moves in that show were amazing), i like the lead performances (not as much as the originals but they still did a good job).
The sets were a bit bland but they were in the 80s production to and i did not find anything wrong with the costumes.
I agree the director made a bit of a mess of certain things but all in all it was a fun revival.

What does that have to do with anything?
Neither do a lot of broadway shows.

The title of the thread. "What went wrong?" Why did the show fail?

I think another issue was, in part, that the grandness of the club made it feel less like a St. Tropez night club, and more like a Vegas show, and I cite the ribbon twirlers in the opening song.
And the timing was kind of wrong, there wasn't a *need* for this showt to have a revival, yet.
And songanddanceman2, the "Oh, Calcutta!" revival returned it's investments, and at one time, because of it's odd performing schedule, a longer running show than "A Chorus Line."

Posted: 3/13/07 at 9:46amGary Beach (like Nathan Lane) was just doing his usual thing -- nothing new from him. Zaza needs to have warmth and the whining needs to be handled well or just comes off as irritating. Beach was just doing a cartoon portrayal of Zaza and I could have cared less whether or not he reconciled with Jean Michel. The whole tempo of the show was WAY too rushed, particularly "I Am What I Am." It just felt like Zaks wanted the first act over QUICKLY and people out drinking up in the lobby. I LOVED the cagelles and the choreography. Also thought the sets and costumes were great. But, ultimately, if you can't connect with Georges and Zaza emotionally, nothing else in the show really matters.

"But I don't understand how anyone can insult William Ivey Long's costumes. I thought they were some of his best and more deserving of the Tony than "Light in the Piazza" or whatever. Did "Piazza" win? I kind of thought so, but I can't remember..."
Honey, if it was a design award that year, you can be certain that Piazza took home that award.

Posted: 3/15/07 at 5:00pmThe show stinks - revival, original, whatever. The only thing that could have saved its original, vastly over-praised production would have been Gower Champion. He could have camouflaged the mediocrity that it truly was - still is - and forever will be..

Just to reply once again to a dying thread...
I did not find Gavin's hair appaling.
Quite lovely actually.

I loved every single second of this production. Especially the fantastic dancers... ANDY PELLICK.
I wish it never closed. I would say the dancers were magic on stage. I went a few times and I would have gone a few more if it was still open.
Personally adore the book. It was a lot of fun.
I miss it. I miss Andy Pellick's incredible cage dance.
I don't think there was anything wrong with the production.
I love the message of the show. And the music is stunning.
"I AM WHAT I AM" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Posted: 4/13/07 at 3:33amI have . . . um . . . "seen" the show and enjoyed it a lot. Granted, I have never seen the original or heard the original cast recording before "watching" the revival. There were a few things that I didn't like, but overall I was entertained.
