Posted: 9/25/08 at 9:28pmJustin Johnston didn't join the Broadway cast of Rent until 2002. He doesn't compare with most of these, so it's sad that he's the first person you thought of.

And Marilyn Caskey is slated to return as Madame Giry whenever she finishes up at Gypsy. She is a fabulous actress.
Several ensemble members of The Lion King have been there the whole time.
Tom Alan Robbins as Pumba has been there forever as well (not sure if he still is).

Well.. to be honest Skittles, I am not a huge broadway buff. Now, I love musicals, plays, etc. But I couldnt tell you who played who in whatever musical. I know who the actors and actresses are, but I don't know back stories... ergo I ask my question.

despite not being in the OBC Karmine Alers was the original choice and partial inspiration for Mimi in Rent

Don't forget that Marilyn Caskey played Carlotta before she did Madame Giry...though I believe she took significant time off from the show before returning as Giry.
Richard Warren Pugh was in Phantom 18 years from the show's first preview until he died 2 years ago, and I don't think he ever took a leave to do anything else, so he is definitely up there as far as longest in one show.
Phantom really seems to have some long runners in their company over the years. Though it must be nice to have that type of job security, especially in this industry.

Bill Nabel was with Beauty and the Beast from
workshops to the final performance (Ensemble, u/s Lumiere, u/s Cogsworth, u/s Maurice, u/s Monsieur D'Arque)
I think he wins.
Do you know how to count?! He obviously doesn't even come close.

8000? Holy smokes!
I was just going to mention that Donny Osmand did Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for what I seem to remember being close to 3000...
I personally think I would kill myself after that many times of any show... Which is why I have such great respect for the brilliant men and women on the Broadway stage.

I have played the same role for 35 years in "My Life is Like a Musical"
does that count? And I never got an understudy.
